well i just bought this 96 GSX early this summer and it has 370 hours on it. it ran very solid all summer but the past few times i took it out it has had RPM problems. after driving a little bit it starts to only max out at like 5000 RPM and goes slow. I just took it out for a spin today and it never got over 5000 RPM not even at the beggining. I think it is most likely a carb problem but i am mechanically handicapped so im not too sure. If the carbs need to be rebuilt, how much would that cost to have someone do it or is it somewhat easy to do if I follow the steps ive seen on these forums?

The steps are easy to do if you have a manual. I suggest you become a "Premium Member" to get a manual to download and do the project right. We will be here too if you get in a jam.

yeah but is this problem i am describing mean the carbs need to be rebuilt or are there other things that cause this.

you can disconnect red wire from rectifier, that might do it. Bein 96", dont no history, i'd remove the grey fuel lines and clean fuel selector valve and also, rebuild the carb/s..

If it has the gray fuel lines, there is no point to doing anything to it, until they are REPLACED and the fuel system cleaned out. Those Gray fuel lines are a disaster. And, at about this age, they will be clogging up your fuel system.

yeah i hear that from a lot of people, the fuel lines are bad stock. HOWEVER, i am machanically handicapped. a very rare disease i was born with. i have to wear a helmet when i check the oil on my car. kidding but yeah i dont even know where the fuel lines are. are they the ones from the gas tank to the engine?

Yeah, that's the ones.

If you are not able to replace these, (or get them replaced) your mechanical troubles will INCREASE.

alright "CRASH"..j/k, take gander at gas tank, you'll see the hoses attached on top of baffle, those are the fuel lines. Follow each one, where they go, get familiar w/ it all, then hit autozone up, get 20ft of 1/4in black fuel line(.25 ft), then replace the grey lines, one at time...
