i have a 96 gsx 3 seater and i just got it from a friend and it has been sitting for like 2 years. The problem is that when i start it up it starts fine after messing with the throttle but when i try to go it only runs for about 10 feet then dies off, this can happen 15 times in a row and i can never get it to run for longer. What could be the problem, low oil shut off? Also where is the oil filler located to check the levels?

Does it still have the old gray fuel lines?

If it does, you will probably have to replace all of them, and then clean out the whole fuel system.

you got the resivoir tank, it feeds the rotary valve assy. The crank/rod bearings are lubed from same oil, goin to pump/injector and mixes w/ gas.
With sit'n 2yrs, do compression check and if good, i'd rebuild the carbs and replace grey lines to start with, lso clean/replace the fuel selector valve...

how do i check the oil level, where is the resevor tank? are these motors 2cycle or 4 cycle?

A 2-stroke. Look for jug w/ dark fluid in it. If no "jug", then check to see if a hose (approx 3/4-1in diameter) running from bottom of carbs to bottom of exhaust. If so, then its a premix setup, and just make sure that line has no air-bubbles/gap. If this senerial, then mix your gas at 40/50-1. (16oz=5gal, 16oz=6gal)

i found a jug with a cap that is right under the hood, it says use synthetic 2stroke oil, so iu am assuming that is for the pre mix. Now that i foundout that i have this do i still have to premix the gas?
Also is this oil tank the one that goes to the crankcase also or do i have to put any in the crankcase?

You should go to youtube, and type in 2 stroke engine. And then type 4 stroke.

Your unit uses an oil injector, to inject oil into the gas as it runs. Chain saws use premix of oil in the gas.

OK, then go to youtube, and view how the crankcase is lubed. (like I said above) It is lubed from the oil in the fuel, which the injector pump mixes as you ride, out of a small oil tank. This oil is then burned, with the fuel, as you ride. That is what the smoke in the exhaust is, (on startup especially) and why the exhaust smells different than lawn mower engines, and car motors. (At least Briggs and Stratton ones!)

Welcome to the world of 2 stroke engines!

i would try a can of seafoam before you do any of that stuff because that solves your symtoms for many people. the gas in the tank was probly really old

For clarity, gas in the big tank, oil in the little tank. There is no pre-mixing of gas and oil that you should be doing before pouring anything.
