After my 96 Challenger gets to around 3500 RPMs it starts winding out up to 7000 RPMs if I let it, with no additional speed.
This first started as I was leaving a no wake zone and throttled up, it sounded like something snapped. I had no propulsion at all, so once I paddled back to shore and trailered the boat, I tore it apart and found the PTO flywheel and driveshaft gears to be damaged. I replaced them with new parts including the carbon ring assembly.
That solved a clanking noise I was having before at low RPM and I have movement once again, but it is like a car with the clutch slipping. I have inspected the impeller and wear ring and they appear to be ok, with no excessive clearance and checked for leaks including resealing the jet pump with no improvement.
Is it possible that the center hub of the impeller is spun? I am running out of ideas. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
