I am having an issue with my Challenger and I was hoping that some of the more experienced folks on here may be able to help me.

The issue I am having is that the boat will only run at 5500 RPM when under load in the water.

Here is how it started.
A couple of weeks ago I was out running the boat and everything was working great and the motor would run up to 7K and we could pull a tuber and skier with no issues. One of the kids sucked in a the tow rope that then stalled the motor. After cutting the rope out didn't see any visable damage but at time the boat would run just fine and other time it would only rev up to 5500 RMPs.

Later in the day the boat felt sluggish and I looked in the engine compartment and noticed that it tons of water in it. to the point where the bildge pump could not keep up if the boat was moving.

What I found that water was coming out of the bottom of the water flow regulator. I pulled it apart on the water an found a gain of sand at the bottom of the regulator seat. Once removed the engine compartment stayed dry.

However it would not run over 5500 RPM still. Looking around on the forum I found the discussion on the rave valves. I pulled them and found that on the blade edged they was a solid buildup. I cleaned both of them and put it back together. I also replaced the spark plugs at that time.

I took the boat out last night and it runs smoother and gets up to 5500 RMP quicker but it will not go past that point. It appears that there is little to no change in RPM in the last inch to inch and a half of the throttle. It also smells a little rich, and I don't know if that is because of full throttle and no increase of RMP?

I looked at my water flow regulator and the red adjustment on the top is about a 1/16" or more below flush with the top. I don't know if I should adjust that or if that is OK.

So my question is where do I look next?

Sorry for the long explination, any help would be greatly appreicated.

No errors. I have a weak alarm. When I put the key on I get the two beeps as normal and it starts without any issues.

The pump can be binding... or there could be some other damage.

So... I would remove the pump, and check it.

Then, I would verify compression, and that the throttles are opening all the way.

I would think it would have something to do with sucking in the rope.

But, it is not uncommon for a rectifier to limit max RPM when they begin to fail.

You can unplug it and see what happens. It's a free test other than your time.

Thanks for the input.
I verified that the throttle cables are operating smooth and going from fully closed to open.
Engine compression is 150psi in one and 155psi in the other

Attached is a picture of my water flow regulator. Does this look right? I am looking through the manual and it does not appear to be correct with respect to how the bellows should be pushing against that seat.

I did not get a chance to pull the pump. I don't see any obvious damage and that appears to be a fairly involved process.

I will go and look on the rectifier next.
Thanks again
