I just got two gti's a 96 and a 97, they both start right up,( havent beeen used in over a year acording to the seller) filled both up with fuel, they run and take off ok but soon bog down with very little power, changed fuel filters no change, the 97 runs better than the 96 which wont get over 20% throttle and wont run at all on reg tank only on reserve, the 97 wont top out and intermittently runs strong then bogs, read a lot of threads here and sounds like, old fuel lines, clogged filters, rebuild carbs, RAVE valves, impeller adjustments not sure i want to tackle all this myself, they sure start up and run good on the trailer, oh ya the fuel guage light is red on the 96 and no digital readout in center section of guage and the 97 guage shows almost empty but both are full.....any ideas or all the above? :ack:

Welcome to the seadoo forum rcemery. Sounds like you have been doing some homework. Your hitting the nail on the head. I would start with cleaning the carburetors, they might not need to be rebuilt. Be careful with the diaphragms and keep the manual handy or at least the correct page so you don't get messed up in the order assembly. Replace the Grey fuel lines, clean the fuel water separator. The raves are easy to do to and should be done annually. Check the impeller wear ring if it revs up but cavitates and won't go too fast. Here is how to check the fuel guage resistance;

You need to check the Pink and Pink/Black wire coming out of the baffle tube in the gas tank. The sending unit works off resistance. Pull the plug apart at the tank, and use an ohm meter to check for resistance between the two pink wires. The resistance will be different depending on how much fuel is in the fuel tank. If you get no resistance, remove the clamps off the sender, and pull the sending unit out of the fuel tank. Check the magnets on the float in the sending unit. To get to the float out, pop the bottom off and look for the 4 magnets on the float. If they are missing use a strong magnet to get them out of the tank bottom. If they are dirty clean them and re-insert it back in the baffle tube and check the wires again to check for readings of resistance depending on where the float is in the baffle tube. If still no reading of resistance replace the sender. If you get readings, check continuity of wiring to guage. If all wiring checks out ok the guage is bad. Keep me posted on your progress.

at $100 an hour you wanna do all you can yourself. but, these are GTI's. 720 motors. no rave valves. at least my 97 GTI is 720. i think 787 was in GTX. so they are single carb engines. a little simpler to work on. you also need to service your pumps which will get you a look at your wear rings.

I have a 98 GTI 717 and I found that the carburetor’s internal fuel filter gets clogged quit often. If all the other filters look good, this filter could be your problem. It is letting enough fuel by to start but not enough to allow you to open it up.

Hope this helps,

Vic

Vic, do you have the GRAY fuel lines on you seadoo? That might be the problem, same as the original poster.

Karl

Yes I have the grey lines... but the fuel does flow through them. The internal carb fuel filter was all gummed up.

Vic, the inside of the "Gray" fuel lines deteriorate and gum up the Carb filters. Replace them with the black fuel lines, of the same length and diameter. It has been a problem with every seadoo owner that has the GRAY lines.
