951 Worst nightmare...

Snapped connecting rod. Pulled engine out of my boat and found my worst nightmare.. **upper and lower** case halves cracked. no holes but cracks.
should I send them out to be hot tanked (cleaned) and welded ? or should I find nice used case? possibly Ebay or a fellow member also if I find used cases can I use my old jugs? or should I have the matching jugs to those cases? ** also note my jugs will need sleeves as they were broken in the mayhem.

The reed area took some damage but I've been told that's just minor and can be cleaned up. at this point I'm just unsure of my steps going forward.

Thanks for all help and assistance!

i am not a 951 guy, but snapped connecting rods in that engine seem to be the theme this week. i would bet there are perhaps 4 or 5 others that have very recently posted threads or inside of threads with this same issue. its really hard to tell from the photo you posted, but that crack looks weldable to me. probably best to look at the inside to make a better decision. it doesn't sound like the 951 is a particularly reliable engine. i believe it is strung out to the max hp limit of the design. most likely, purchasing new parts would be the safest way to go.

What do you guys think of the case damage? weldable and fixable or toss them and find a set of cases?

Well, perhaps it’s fixable, but she looks very trashed. I would look around and see if you can find a rebuildable engine that hasn’t met the grizzly fate yours has. Unfortunately, it sounds to me like most 951’s suffer a death by connecting rod failure. That said, when you rebuild, it would be a stellar idea would be to use brand new rods.

another possibility to consider might be to replace your engine/mpem with a slightly less powerful 787 or a much more reliable 717.
Less speed, less fun = less cost, less hassle, and greater reliability. Just a thought.....

FlyboyX thanks for the feedback, I'll look around for a set of cases but it seems to be a hard find. I contacted westside powersport but he said shipping on the item would be costly as I'm in Canada. beside Ebay would you happen to know anywhere I could source a set?

Sorry, apologies,,,am behind in the thread,,,those cases look destroyed,,,,the 720's have a 4 point motor mount,,,tuff swap... Maybe Kyle has a set or contact,,,give him a call,,,he would be very close to you in st Kitts.

POPPS no I wont be doing a swap of less power, that's out of the question......
I'm either sticking with the 951 or going for a 4 tec swap :p but if i 4 tec swap then I'm married to this thing for the next few years. I've reach out to kyle about a set of cases he has yet to get back to me. but we've been in contact recently, I know he's just a busy guy.

Apologies again, am behind in the thread,,,damn iPad,,,if I can help,,,let me know,,,I am not far away from niagara,,,live at 50 road.
