the ski
1998 seadoo xp limited

motor 951 stock(rave valves upgraded exhaust from factory)

rumor has it the 951 will do 60-65 on glass water rolling in the 7000rpm range..

yesterday i got the ski running like a top after 1 hr of tinkering with a max out speed of 50-53mph(no im not upset with this) on semi flat water running in at 6,800rpms proably hitting rev limiter due to slight chop.

the goal:
solid 65 with a max of 75 mph

since the factory claims 65 is max on flat water that's my starting goal that way if i am in the semi chop i can still pull the 65 out and on glass the goal is 70mph which is a 5mph gain than factory.. i say 75 is big goal but 70+ is all i am really looking for

consideration:
i do not want to go with a stroker motor
i do not want aftermarket carbs
i do not want a ski that requires exotic fuel 100,c16,q16,import must be pump gas friendly

the reason i say this is aftermarket carbs require tuning regularly which means more maintenance.

rumor mill:
i have read over a few things and ride plates, intake grates are not really ideal for max top end
pro/pitch selection is a big part in top end speed
getting the mpem remapped can aid in better fuel/air along with a timing map

parts i have looked at/ considered:
(keep in mind the more stock i can keep it the more reliable it will be this means bolt ons are ideal)

i have herd about the 97.5 white pipes as a factory upgrade

another modd that's thrown around frequently is rejet

msd ignition upgrade
http://www.freestylefactory.com/msd-ignition-enhancer-sd-800-95-98-sea-doo.html
the thing i dont like is it seems to be an aftermarket ecu which means setting up timing maps(no im not afraid of this just dont want a ski that requires tuning for weather conditions, humidity ect ect..
their is also thehttp://www.microtouchinc.com/ which is on the same lines as the msd unit..

i have herd about doing intake manifold upgrades
seems the the big tak is/was the r&d performance but they offer 2 diffrent units the dominator and the regular unit havnt seen much talk about which was used
http://www.rd-performance.com/newproducts/seadoo/951.asp
^^could build a ski directly off that site^^^

with the intake you would need to do a complete package to get the best bang for the buck

manifold
reed stuffers
power plenium

well what do you think..
this would obviously be a winter project/upgrade

Mine is 100% factory, except for a solas concord impeller, and extra head cooling.

I've hit 67.8 on a GPS speedo. and can average 65.5 all day long at 7,200 RPM.

well, I could for 2 years, then yesterday i sucked in some water... now hitting 60 is a chore.

BUT, i'm cleaning it up and hope to hit the water WED and this weekend.

Mine is a 02 that will rip your arms off in the 0-45 run... the tach just BOLTS from 1,400 to 7k INSTANTLY.

i have yet to get the 60 mark.. mid to low 50 on semi flat...
kinda why im looking into options for a bit more performance. i figure if i can pull out a 70mph on ideal conditions i can hit 60 all the time.

what does you wear ring look like? i'd start there, next do aftermarket Flame aresters (rejet) and a pipe. next an impellor. check out "ben's secret mods for 951 and 1050 setups" on green hulk. just google it.

no idea where that is honestly wear ring...
i have read over bens post 100 times problem is it was created in 2006 and last active helpful post in their was 10/2006

some if not most of the aftermarket stuff was not readily avaliable back than.

he does talk about pro/reject mostly in the beginning.. but i am looking more at the basic bolt ins in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the motor.. the faster and more air a motor can get in and out of the combustion chamber the more power it will make.

i am sure their has been some breakthrus in technology since 2006 on these motors.

the wear ring is in the pump, it creates the seal between the impeler and metal of the pump to create the jet of water to propel you. if it is damaged/ wore out you will not get as much propulsion as you should/could, thus lower speeds, and worse take off's.

as far as bens, most the stuff is still avaliable if you look, but the cold hard fact you have to face( and something we all have to doo) is that the industry is moving away from 2-stokes. there is no way around it. aftermarket compenys only put money into researching things that will sell. and the 2-stoke proformance section is dying. they are still producing parts but no more major aftermaket players(that i know of) are still pouring money into research and development for older motors.

i agree with you on the fact 2 strokes are going way and fast.. but allot of the general info does not specify what manifold or reeds ect ect are the ideal.. so im assuming that many of those parts were not available as ben gave specific names to parts.

i have posted on green hulk and have not gotten a response so im still at a loss.. i may call r&d closer to the season ending and see what they say.. peoblem is that no manufacturer will direct you towards a better part thats not theirs.

just kinda frustrated with the fact their is good info and very knowledgeable people but they tend to stay tight lipped.

you can always call bill o'neal at water craft magic. he's a grumpy old guy but knows his stuff. if you kiss his butt he'll help you out and point you in the right direction, or head over to pwc today and he'll most likely chime in on your question.

Before looking into upgrades I would start with the fact that your only turning 6800 and getting 50-53 mph. A stock 951 xp should turn just over 7k and be in the 60mph range. As stated, the wear ring is a good place to start. When your ready to look into mods, a coffman pipe is a good place to start. Some will suggest flame arrestors and re jet, but others will say its not worth it. If more mph is your goal, I would then look at the solas concord impeller.
