951 crank gear with no alignment mark

I have a new crankshaft and there is no mark on the gear so I can line it up with the balance shaft. Has anyone seen a 951 crank gear with no alignment mark?

Sounds like you won't need this... I took a couple photos of crankshaft alignment on a 951 after receiving a new WSM crankshaft that was missing the alignment mark. I found that with these photos I could align the balance shaft to the crankshaft without having the mark because one tooth is a lot. You are looking for the balance shaft weights to be perpendicular and opposite of the crankshaft weights. You can experiment with one tooth in either direction and it is obviously out of alignment. Each tooth is 8.37 degrees (43 teeth), so you can see that much error without any special equipment.

If you can get a replacement great, if not you can try what I'm saying snd see what you think. In my case I was going to have to pay to ship it to WSM and that was fairly expensive.

Note: the photos were taken on an engine before disassembly and the crank and balance shaft had marks and they were properly aligned.

Gregg,
You are correct! I thought about it and my issue is IF I make a mistake then I get to pull this engine apart again, buy gaskets etc. WSM said they would replace it so, to be safe, I went with that.
Thank you for your help! I saved the photos just in case!

I just purchased a new WSM crankshaft and same thing... no marking on the gear.....unreal...
The "QC" seems to be lacking! WSM sent me another crankshaft. The good news was it had a mark on the gear. The bad news was it was on the wrong side! I used it. Good luck!

Yeah I did some more research and found other threads that helped. Luckily by doing this I was able to find the mark. It was on the wrong side as well, very hard to see. The scary part was before I found the mark, I lined up both crankshafts (the new WSM and old WSM) identically and thought I had the mark by measuring it. Turned out I was two teeth off... Hopefully this mark is legit cuz if not ill be chapped.

You can see the black dot if you look carefully on the old camshaft.

I have had good luck with WSM but my issue was that I PAID for a new crank with no issues. One that is missing the alignment mark has an issue and therefore shifts the liability for an error to me.
You probably will have no issues aligning it without a mark. I would like to know how the rest of the project goes! Good luck!
