So… I hit a good sized wave today (fresh water) and the front of my ski dove in pretty deep. Water came over the handlebars. The ski bogged for about 5-10 secs afterwords and died. Started right up and then died again. The starter then wouldn’t turn over the motor. Towed it into a cove and then the motor would turn over but not start. Took out the plugs to see if water would shoot out when I turn over the motor (no water did). Put one plug back in and put my thumb over the cylinder hole to see if water would get on my thumb. Front (mag) cylinder felt normal but the PTO cylinder seems to have no compression. Is there a chance it could be anything OTHER than a fried cylinder? I’d there anywhere else I could be losing compression on that side? First day in on vacation and just curious if I’ll be able to repair it without rebuilding the engine. Thanks.

Its not the air mixture,,,its that water is non compressible,,,and if you have a strong starter,,,it will force the water by the piston and rings,,,by the rings and score the cylinder,,,

I was once wave jumping,,,hit the lake bottom on the trough of the wave..and ruined the crank,,,rpms were up,,,and then came to a standstill hitting the lake bottom,,,normally poor compression can come from a seized piston/scored cylinder,,,a scored rotary valve surface,,,a hole in the case of that cylinder,,,non sealed cylinder head,,,I'm sure the guys out here will add to my list,,,these are the ones that have occurred to me.

Yeah, got it. I had a glimmer of hope it could be something immediately repairable but I think I was in a bit of denial. Thanks for your reply. I’m gong order a replacement engine. I’ve got everything else on the ski updated and working well. Even the VTS!

Yeah. Popped off the head. Found some scoring on that cylinder. I’ve rebuilt the top end on a Yamaha 1100 before. I didn’t need to remove the engine for that. Can I get the sleeves out without removing the motor? If I’m going to take the motor out, I’ll probably put a refurbished one back in. But if I can just take off the sleeves I’ll just swap out those.

Btw… the plastic box over my carbs was missing a few tabs that would keep it closed tightly. I think that’s how the water got into the engine.

Just pull the one jug,,,bore/hone the cylinder and replace the piston and rings to the next size,,,you don't have to pull the motor,
