95 Speedster slowly comming to life

HI Everyone, Thanks for all the advice of late re the Speedster. Im very happy to say with a little love ( did the crank test and the battery boost) the starboard engine kicked over and then into life with a whole lot of smoke, spluttering crap and all sorts of garbage out of the exhaust. let it run for alittle bit to clean it out and the revs came down and it began to purr. It will now start first time without the battery booster. Very happy.

THe port engine was then given the same treatment, removed plugs and crank test.) SLowly it began to crank. slowly the fuel moved through the lines and closer it got. Till Finally with a big crank it started and ran for a few seconds. Unfortunately by this stage the batteries were both starting to get low. and are now on the charger over night to have another try tommorow.

IM wondering now is there anyway of having this engines start more easily. Especially the port engine. or is this something i will need to put up with

In the next few days, fuel filters will be replaced. Spark Plugs and newer fuel will be added. im also going to try and clean the plug leads and see if that helps.

But are there any other ideas.
 
You will find that it will start easier now that you have got it started the first time!:hurray:
If it has any air leaks in the motors or fuel system, it will make it harder to start the longer it sits. When rebuilding the motors, there are tests for them to hold air pressure. This controls the amount of vacuum that is supplied to the carbies and in turn the amount of fuel drawn in. The fuel pump connected by the pulse line also relies on the engine being sealed.
By cleaning filters(remember filters in carbies) and getting new lines, you should make it better. Clean any joints or valves of any gunk from grey fuel lines!
When you clean the spark plug leads, you can chop a short piece off the end and rejoin it to make a better connection, the end section corrodes after a while.
When you have it running test the voltage at the battery to make sure it is charging, should be around 14 volts.
And lastly, the best bit of advice, "Read Everything" you can find, by using the search facility you can find almost anything out, about these boats!!!
 
Can also, where choke assy is, remove it, and put in place, a "primer kit". Comes with all hardware and instructions, as to what fuel line/s to tap into...
 
Okay jsut to clarify the starboard motor started anbd is now purring, it barked at me the fist time it kicked into life but it started.

The port engine, has started a little - eg 5 seconds then died. Batteries are now both flat.

With The port engine spluttering as i would call it, once the batteries are charged up this should kick into life, bark at me then start purring once all the crap is out of the carbies / engine?
 
One thing you could do is to take out those two mini-batteries, cut out the middle of the battery box, and put in one full size battery... Search the forum for that one, somebody posted pictures.

Perhaps the aussie guys could recommend a battery, i was thinking somehting like a n70zz or zzl from century / yuasa something with big cranking capacity?

or the equivalent from exide

I'm not sure how batteries are categorized where you're at... I used what my country calls "group 24", just a cheap battery from our walmart. Just make sure it is deep cycle/marine, and designed for cranking. A regular non-deep-cycle battery will only last a few months if it is allowed to drain down all the way a bunch of times (which happens with boats' bilge pumps, etc)

I posted the wrong group code... its group 24 in my boat...

I understand the advantage of dual batteries, but two of your 16-CLB's 19AH doesn't quite equate to the one 80AH rating of my group 24... I'd rather one battery that lasts all day listening to the tunes and running the bilge, than two batteries that are both flat by lunchtime ;)
