'95 HX question

I just got a '95 SeaDoo HX yesterday that has not been run in 2 years. All appears to be ok with it. My questions is, do I need the DESS key to start it or is this just a push down kill switch? Also, do I hook up a water hose to rear female hose adapter to start engine and run it without fear of overheating? I have never owned a PWC so this is all new to me. Thanks so much for any advice you may lend.

Hook up the hose but do not turn it on yet, then start the ski then go turn on the water can run for about 3 mins without being in the water, then shut the water off then turn the ski off. Make sure you do not turn the water on before starting the ski and that you turn the water off before shutting down the ski.

as far as I know it is equipped with a lanyard....but I do not know about that model
