94 XP Question on Compression

I recently purchased a 94 XP. The craft was submerged about 8 months ago and the seller drained the gas tank and oil reservor soon after it happened. Before purchasing I checked the compression onboth cylinders and read 150/145. I thought was good? I put it together and took it to a mechanic who rebuilt the carbs. The mechanic put the XP in a tank to test run. Prior to running he took a compression test and read 164/145. He ran the engine for a few minutes and said he was unable to keep it running without pulling the choke. He suppected that the compression had cratered. He did another test whilethe engine was warm this time he said 120/110. He now claims that the engine needs a rebuild at a cost of $2000 and has offered to buy the XP from me. Now this seems fishy to me. I picked up the XP today and did a compression test at home and it reads 150/145. I put some Marvel Mystery oil and let it set for a few hours and now I think my next test is the lake. Bases on the above storey do any of you thinks that this engine needs to be replaced?

ya that seems reaaaaaaaallly fishy....id take it out and try it close to shore. $2k to rebuild? you should be able to get it rebuilt for $700 (Check ebay) then become a premium member to this site, download the manual and swap it out yourself. thats if u figure out you need to replace it. since you get good compression..and fact hes offering to buy a ski with a "blown motor" so easily would definitely throw a red flag for me

My soap box!....

I've got so many soap box posts about this type of swindle, that I'm going to do my best to refrain from getting upset.

You did well. The only mistake I see you made was taking it to him to begin with. We can help you with your carbs. You don't need that jerk to tell you that your engines compression is falling, each time he screws with it. Hell, he's probably doing something to the gage so he can show you, convince you that you can at least recoup some of your money by selling it to him.........

Sorry, these jerks make me so mad!....

Take it out and see how it runs. It's an older ski so it's not going to be like riding with the 787 motor. But, it should give you several seasons of fun. If you have acceleration issues, let us know. You may need to go with a wearing ring.........

and if ya have questions on the xp ill try best to help as i also have a 94 XP,had her out today for first time since buying it, she runs good, decent speed, and very nimble...not same power as my GSX Limited with the 951 but it was still rather fun, jumped some nice 2-4' waves on lake erie today

Power verses touring....

:agree:....even though the XP doesn't have the 951, the smaller hull and ligtweight design make it more of a play toy than the larger GSX:cheers:

Agreed. He did an inspection on the XP. He said that the jet was in good shape and commented how clean and low hours this XP may have had... I paid him the cost of rebuilding the carbs and quickly made my way out.

Cool...!

You did the right thing..........there are too many people in this forum able to help you with these type tasks......just ask!..........

TxGasman i have had the same deal with the repair shop with my 96 xp i had the guy that i had working on my ski say that the motor was bad right after i bought it from a friend. I know the friend that i bought it and i had all the info on the ski when it was serviced where it was serviced at and he told me the engine would not would not last 2 months. I asked him what hes suggests and he said sell it i was like i don't think so. I knew that the motor had just gotten rebuilt the past summer with everything new. I wasn't going to tell him that. I just said i'll bring it back when it goes out. I havent been back since. What i would suggest is get an owners manual and read up on quick easy fixes and save some money and do it yourself and any questions start an new tread i know were all boat people well help you out.
