94 SPX, Won't run correct in water....

I recently purchased a 1994 SPX and it ran fine out of the water. Once we put in the water, it will start but has no power. It runs great out of water while on a stand but once it is in water there is nothing. It will run very rough and then die. There is no throttle response when it is "chugging". Have any of you had this problem before? Thanks a lot, DGI140
 
need to rip thru the fuel system, and carbs, but prior to that, do a compression check...everything sounds good out of water...:cheers:
 
I went through the carbs and cleaned most everything. It is running perfect while on the trailer. I tried to put in the water again today and it didn't start. Once I put it back on the trailer it ran great. What would cause it to not start when in the water only? Please help.
 
i have the same problem with my 95 seadoo xp. its got the 720 motor. as soon as i put on trailer or take it out it runs fine. I put in water, it dies or runs for 10 secs then dies. Any ideas?
 
Do a compression test. Here is some information on it.
You'll need a compression tester. Go to Auto Zone. I think they sell for like $25.00. The compression gage, will screw in the cylinder head in place of the spark plugs. To test compression, remove both spark plugs. Place spark plug caps on the plug cap studs near the cylinder head to ground the empty caps. This completes the circuit of the ignition electrical system and prevents any electrical problems from the caps being un grounded. Using the correct adapter for the threaded end of the tester,( same length of the spark plug threads length)screw in the tester in one plug hole. Hold the throttle wide open. Push the start button. Watch the compression gauge, when it peaks out at the most compression, let go the start button. Read the psi number. I would do it 3 times to be sure it is accurate. Check both cylinders the same way. The ideal compression is 150 psi per cylinder. If it is less, it's not a problem as long as they are close to being the same. If the psi is less than 90 it might need be time for a tear down and a rebuild. If the psi in 1 cylinder is say 140 psi and the other is 80 psi you need to tear down and repair. This difference is a lot and there is a problem. I hope this helps you.

All of your help is greatly appreciated. I am showing 125-130 in front cylinder and 55-60 in rear. Any suggestions on what to check first (if there is an easy fix for this) or do I just need to have it rebuilt? Thanks again.
 
It is a 650. Thanks for all of your help. I think I found the problem. I am in need of a new piston and "jug" or cylinder sleeve. It looks like that the guy that sold it to me tried to rebuild it. Somehow, it looks as if there was a screw left in the cylinder. It did a lot of damage. I am checking with a friend to see if the sleeve can be smoothed out and just try to get a new piston. Do any of you know a cheap on-line used parts store? I do not want to sink much money in it due to the fact that it is a 1994. I am no mechanic but luckily I have a friend that is helping me out a bit.
 
is it a 650 or a 650X? last 3 numbers on cyl part number...380 or 382? they are different. what does the inside of the head look like? that screw probably really screwed it up too. lotsa cheap cyls and heads on ebay for 650 engines. new piston is about 70 bucks.
