94 Speedster Start Problem

I'm new to the site, but have owned my 94 Speedster for about 5 yrs. Since I've had it I've always had a problem with the right motor not starting, but the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it won't start the minute I put it in the water, sometimes it won't start after using it for an hour or longer. If I let it sit for a while (sometimes one to two hours) it will generally re-start and the process starts all over. By the way the left motor always starts.

I've chekced the start/stop buttons (by switching them), changed the solenoids (or switched them while experiencing the problem), changed the battery, checked the ground wire, and visually inspected the wiring in the MPEM.

This has gotten worse over time, and now I can expect it to happen every time I take it out. I'm very frustrated! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome to the seadoo forum Mike. Without knowing any mechanical back ground on the seadoo, its kinda hard to diagnose the problem. Have you changed out the GRAY fuel lines on the engines? If not it is possible that they might be causing your problem. The Gray fuel lines deteriorate from the inside out, and clog the internal filters in the carburetors and cause the problem you describe. The carbs may need to be serviced also after you replace the Gray fuel lines. Take a sample of the fuel line to an auto parts store like Auto Zone and get the replacement line. Get a measurement of the lines you need to replace all of them. Replace the clamps too if they are corroded. Use stainless steel ones in replacement. Remember to tell them "Fuel Line". If you decide to take the carbs apart, to clean them, be carefull not to damage or tear the diaphrgams or you'll have to get a rebuild kit to replace them. Do you have a seadoo shop manual? Here is an idea if you don't. You could join as a "premium member". As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and privet use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. Click on the "Seadoo Manuals" link at the top of the page for more details. If you need any help or get in a jam, we are always here to answer your questions too. Premium members get priority when it comes to getting quick detailed answers.

I hope this helps you. Keep us posted on you progress, as we're here to help.

Thanks for the response. When I say it won't start I mean it won't even turn over. I press the start button and there is absolutely no effect. Could the fuel line solution you mentioned cause this type of problem where the motor won't even try to turn over?

The seadoo doesn't turn over...than it has to be an electrical problem somewhere...I thought it just wouldn't fire up. It might be the battery. Did you load test it? just checking it for a full charge or 12 volts at rest won't mean under a LOAD like starting it has a full 12 volts Take it to like Auto Zone and have it load tested. I have seen batteries have only 6 or 7 volts under load...no start. At rest have 12 volts because of a bad cell. double check the cables from the battery to the solenoid and the ground. I still think it must be a connection if the battery is good.

Keep us posted.

G'day Mike, I think it could be the starter as well.:agree:
When the motor won't turn over, grab a heavy piece of steel or wood and give the starter a sharp hit, then try and start again. As the brushes get worn sometimes the starter will finish rotating in a spot where they don't make a good contact, the starter wont work no clicks or anything. By hitting it sometimes you can get a better contact and vola!! she starts.:hurray:
Mine was working like this for about 2 week before i got pissed with it and bought a new starter motor.

I've got a starting issue too, which coincidently happened when i lost battery power, once i recharged the battery it wouldn't start , just grinds something inside, could this be a side effect of a bad battrey too, i mean would a low voltage not give aenough push for the starter to fuly engage and just grind?

I replaced the starter about two months ago and still had the problem this last weekend. I did notice that when this motor is doing this the forward/reverse lever does not beep when I put it into neutral; but keep in mind the left motor still starts whether or not the right one does, and whether or not the forward/reverse lever beeps (the motor is always in neutral when I am trying to start it). Is there some type of sensor on the lever that sends a signal to each motor independently giving it the green light to start?

Anyone else have any suggestion?

By the way, to answer an earlier question, I do have the shop manual for the boat.

problem starting

my speedster 2007 430 hp wont start. had boat serviced, sea trial fine. boat then delivered same day. when battery switch turned on port engine makes low buzzing noise. key inserted makes no sound. needles on starboard engine rev counter, fuel gauge, and speedo all flicker around halfway, when either engine starter button is pressed buzzing stops, engines do not fire ,needles return to rest, after couple of minutes buzzing resumes.and needles flicker, battery appears good. radio, blower, bilge pump and radio all function normally. help would be appreciated as am in spain and can not reach any dealers.
