Picked up this ski up really cheap. Guy claimed it’s been on water this year but starter is fried. Confirmed starter would not turn when hooked to battery. Put in new starter and will turnover just fine with no plugs installed. With plugs in it’ll crank one maybe two strokes then stop. Hook up jump box and it turns over fine. Pulled plugs and I notice most forward cly has tan mixture. Cycled it without plugs to clean it up then put plugs in and still same result: will not fully crank with plugs in. Any suggestions? Not trying to rebuild a whole motor. Pictures of the fluid in most forward cly.

First thing I would do is get that all cleaned out, it looks like dirty water, which might mean a leak or somehow he got water in your cylinders. Use a fogger, if you are mechanically inclined take the top off and clean it real good. After you clean it I would check your compression, make sure it is within specs. If that was water you might have been hydro locked.

I have the same issue on my 98 GTX LTD (951). Still working through it myself. With my issue I have replaced solenoid, battery and starter. I am testing the start switch now. I'll let you know what I get.
I did get mine to crank with a little help from starter fluid (got yelled at, not good for engine :)). You can try and spray some gas/oil mix in the carbs to get it going. Weird thing with mine is, once it is cranked and a little warm, it will fire right up afterwards. Seems like when it is cold it has the worst time. Let me know if you figure yours out in them meantime.

Do not use a jump pack or you can fry the computer on these.

That is rusty water so the engine is more than likely trash but you can still try to get it running if you want.

You are going to have to keep cranking until you get it out. Try a little premix down the carbs and new sparkplugs.

You need a good strong battery in these.

On a Facebook page someone susggested the crankcase probably got filled with water and to drain it, clean out cly and try it again. Ran a qt of oil through crankcase and all looked good with no water. I’m struggling to get the nasty mixture out of the cly so I’m using some carb clean to water it down and shoot it out the spark plug hole. I wouldn’t mind taking the head off to clean but not sure where I could get a gasket at.

Yea the starter solenoid is junk on this one so I’ve just been jumping it to get it to crank. Brand new starter and using a car battery right now. Sadly have yet to ever see this run so I’m not trying to spend a lot of money only to learn it might be junk.

Well I’m glad I found out no jump pack because I was charging it up for another round lol.

That seems to be the main issue at hand is getting the mixture out of the cly. Using carb cleaner in cly and I’ll pour some pre mix down the carb to.

Right now using a car battery with jumper cables to the leads on the ski. If I get it running I’ll invest in a nice battery for it.

Do not use carb cleaner as you are washing any lubrication that might remain off the cylinder walls.

This is a 2-stroke so the crankcase is full of your crap, when the piston travels down it is forced up the transfer ports on top of the piston into the combustion chamber so cleaning above the piston will not get rid of the issue. Only cranking/running will bring all the crap up from the crankcase. Sometimes your thumb over the plug hole when cranking will build more vacuum to pull the crap up.

A car battery is fine as long as the car is not running. Also give the starter time to cool between cranking or you will toast it.

Well I pulled the head. Never would have flushed all this out, the exhaust manifold is so full of it that when piston hits very bottom of stroke it fills back in.

She runs!!!! Sucked another qt of fluid out using a hand transfer pump and super small hose. Stuck it through the intake ports in the cylinder on both. Was unbelievable and messy. Put the head on for the last time and tried starting but had no spark. Whatever this 2 to 1 connection is causes a no start. Once it was disconnected it fired right up and sounded good!! I think it might be the key for the lanyard. The stop switch on the handle bars tested good but a little sticky. Any suggestions on what this is? Gotta fix this, new starter solenoid and gaskets for the top end and I think she will be a runner!!!!
