Hi:.

I picked up a 1993 GTS that hasnt ran in a year with the following information from the previous owner. Seems it would start and run fine for a while and then shut off unexpected in middle of lake. Attempting a restart resulted in a "click" when hitting the starter button. Owner replaced battery with new a few days later and it started right up. It quit again a few minutes later and once again, just a "click" when the starter button was pushed. So it seems to shut down for some reason after being run for a few minutes, even with new battery.

I ran compression test 141/150 on a cold engine that hadnt run for 12 months then cleaned out fuel system, added new fuel and battery and it fired right up but I only ran it for 15 seconds or so.

Any ideas?

Don't ride it with a problem. A bad rectifier or a bad stator can harm the mpem/
cdi unit. do a search on both. A starter's bendix can internally facture and the
small bits can end up in the stator, harming it or shorting it out, so it doesn't
charge the battery. The rectifier changes a/c to dc to power the ski and charge
the battery. The Electrical system will not run on A/C current. The chain of power and ground for a 587 has the ground going from the battery to the block then through the ground wire on the mag housing to the electrical box, so you cannot unplug the mag connector without losing your ground in the electrical box, but you can make a jumper wire to bypass the motor completely by running it from the neg terminal on the battery directly to the stud in the Ebox that has all of the black wires attached to it. Then, you can disconnect the mag plug. If that stops the fuse from blowing, you need a new stator. I am not real handy on the Capasitative Discharge Ignition system, so maybe one these other guys can chime in. You might
need to remove the flywheel to investigate the stator condition. You should D/L
a manual, as it has step by step instructions that are easy to understand.
