92 XP Intermittent Spark

Hello all,

I bought a pair of XPs, one running one not, the 92 is the one that does not run and I am trying to fix. The previous owner said he took it out to the lake earlier in the year and it fired up but just died.

When I first got it, I tried to turn it on, only to discover it needed a new starter. Got that fixed, and it started right up, but ran rough. I got the xps late in the summer and wanted it sorted quickly, so I called a marine mechanic.

Perhaps this was a mistake, because it led to the 92 sitting at the mechanics all summer, an 800 dollar bill, and the same problem.

I now have it back, and am determined to figure this out, and get the matching xps out on the water together. I am looking for any tips tricks or knowledge that can point me in the right direction.

Here is what has been done so far:
Compression, 130 each cylinder
Spark good when turning over, but intermitent when fires?
Tether cord ohmed ok
New plugs
Updated fuel lines
Tried new cdi box, same issue
Stator ohmed ok
DVA tested stator yellow/black had .2V, yellow was on/off and black red had good voltage
Spark plug caps were swapped
Coil ohmed out ok
Has voltage at computer,
Grounds ok,
Flywheel ok,
Stator assembly replaced still same issue.

So here is where I am at. The shop said most components in the ignition system tested ok but it still has an ignition problem, so with the Stator already replaced, I have ordered a new mpem, ignition coil, and rectifier. I am hoping that these components will fix it once and for all.

Does anyone have any insight of what else could cause this before I throw all these parts at it?

Thank you.

How do you know the spark is bad "when it fires"?
You can bou a simple spark tester at Harbor Freight.
If it has spark, it has spark.

Aftermarket MPEM's are 99% garbage.

Most issues on these are fuel related and I don't see that the carbs were touched?

I'm just going off the info I got from the mechanic. I got the machine back late in the season, and it pretty well went straight to storage. I will give the carbs a clean, is it worth a rebuild conisidering it does idle? Also it's running mixed gas, the oil pump has been bypassed.

First check spark with a cheap tester. If that checks out then yes carbs are a good start.
You can't just "clean them" you need to properly rebuild them with the correct Genuine parts. No aftermarket carb parts.

I had a hard to find problem on my 91xp. There is a ground wire inside the mag housing that was bad on mine. Not sure if the 92 is the same or not. I also had a Yamaha 650 that had a broken wire that cause an intermittent problem. If you do determine that it is an intermittent spark problem you will need to go over the wiring very carefully. If you have a timing light you can use it to watch the spark as it is running to see if it is dropping out.
