Hi , I have a 1988 seadoo 580 sp that won't shut off when you pulloff the lanyard . Last year it would be intermitten and if the engine was warmed up it would shut off with the lanyard, but not if is was just started up and cold. This year I did not take it out til last week and now it will not shut off at all with lanyard and I have to use the choke to kill it. Two or three years ago I replaced the switch when the black plastic part broke and it worked fine then . Does it ground out the coil or just open a circuit to shut it off . Do you think I need a new coil , because I don't see any loose wires or shorted or even grounded out - bad wiring . Checked all connections in electrical box and inside front engine cover .

i think the kill ciruit is in the revlimiter box or cdi, so it could be one of them that is bad. i have both used if you need one.

12 volt kill switch....

Your electrical system that starts and maintains the engine power supply, runs in a loop. First in the loop is the engine stop switch, which is normally closed. When you want to stop the engine manually, you push the button, this opens the circuit and causes it to loose power in the loop and kill the engine. The second component in that loop is the tether cord. The tether cord switch is normally open. When you cap it with your lanyard, you close the circuit, allowing the loop to be complete and power to the ignition module to run. Then of course, the star button, which is basically a power wire to the solenoid.

If you suspect the tether switch is bad, then you can disconnect it at the switch and hard wire them togehter (you'll have no safety kill if you ride this way and get thrown off) to test it. Then, when you want to kill the motor, disconnect the wires.

If you find this to be the problem, either clean the switch you have real well and try it again or buy a typical safety kill switch from West Marine, or our parts warehouse from the link at the top of the page and replace it.
