i bought a 1996 seadoo gtx with the engine apart. ive gathered up most of the parts i need. i was going to send counterbalance shaft in for an exchange, but when i received the gasket kit thye seals were in the kit.i marked and measured the gear location ,pressed the gear off and polished the seal surface in my lathe.i then pressed the shaft on EXACTLY where it was before. i then put in centers of lathe and checked with dial indto make sure it was true. IS THIS OK or does anyone usually touch these. would not think of touching a crank shaft or anything but this seemed fairly simple

Counter balance shaft?......

From your description of using the lathe and precision measuring equipment, it seems you'd be the most likely person to do the job properly. As long as you pre-measured the bearings, etc....and match the marks up on the balance and crank, then I think you'll be fine. You said you checked to make sure it was true, so when you assemble and start the engine, if it's not correct, you'll know by the vibration.

Don't forget to put one ounce of 30 wt. SAE motor oil in the casing at the gear cogs. If you assemble the motor upside down, put the oil in the balance shaft side because there is a fill hole in the PTO casing at the cylinder.

If you have the cylinders apart, you can see the hole in the casing where the oil is normally put in.

counter balance 787 answers thank

im pretty confident that the positioning is correct.i put it exactly where it was before taking apart.nervous with something new like this to me. i bought this from a guy i worked with,he layed it over the wrong way to long and left it.guess what it took water in and locked up. started with crankcase, cylinders and head. the rest i've been scrounging. i,ve had good luck with rotax snowmobile engines ,but this counter balance shaft and things are new ,adding oil etc have to be carefull.i have an original manual and lots of reading.think ill be ok.

never used any of these forums before. excellent thing with lots of very smart people with experiences that you can learn from rather, than ruining something as a lesson . thanks alot for the answers.

thankyou

Anytime!....

Your welcome Randy!.... I've been here just over a year and the forum has always kept my interest. The people (mechanincs and mechanics in training) here are really cool and always have something to share. The Rotax engines are really cool engines to work with. I'm partial to the older model 787's because of how simple they were in design, yet powerful.
