787 RFI Trigger Wheel

Hi All,

Just a quick sanity check here. when we took our engine apart we removed the cylindrical magnetic ring on our trigger wheel.. not knowing all that much at the time, we didn't draw on any marks to ensure it went back in exactly the same place.

Reading through the shop book the positioning of the magnetic cylinder is critical for the 787. there's a lump on the cylinder and a hole on the trigger wheel that need to be aligned. The 787 RFI has neither the lump on the cylindrical ring or a mark on the trigger wheel... I'm assuming that is because the triggering is performed by the second set of teeth on the trigger wheel which the 787 doesn't have.

Am I right or missing something?

Many thanks,

Ben

Dang no takers yet??

I've done a few RFIs and considering your question you got me thinking. I've always thought the ignition trigger is the space on the outer gear. I never take that crap apart so I can't help you with that. I probably have RFI flywheel in the shop and I can take some pictures for you. Did you download a repair manual yet?

Hi Thanks for the offer. :)

Yes I've checked the manual, and there was nothing there, so I too assumed the missing teeth were the trigger, if you could take a photo of the position of the arrow on the cylinder in relation to the missing teeth I should be able to get it back in place easily.

many thanks,

Ben

Believe the magnetic ring can be whichever way you put it on the RFI. On the carb model not so much. Some idiot took it off and put it on the wrong way on a used wheel I got off of ebay. Thats how I know. Thats also how I know it is possible to get it out and back on without pulling the whole engine, but its a pain. Missing teeth are the time triggers on the RFI as correctly stated above.

Thats great to hear, because I've reassembled the engine and painted it :)
