787 piston pitted

what causes a piston to become pitted and erroding it happed to me twice on the rear cylinder rotory gear was all worn retarding the timing would this do it? or could water be getting in cylinder some how would that do it?

water ingestion, detonation, just to name a couple,

If the rotary valve timing is off it would cause detonation and cause the problem.
