Hi all, I am new to the boards, we have a 96 XP and a 97 GTX and I am having a problem with the XP.

A couple of weeks ago we finally got them both into the water for the first time this season. All went well for about an hour until the XP started acting up.

It started to bog down at WOT (wide open throttle) but at 1/2 it would go fine. Now it bogs down all the time while at WOT it puts along at 30mph and sometimes 15mph. Now the kicker if it’s idling and you berry the throttle she will take right off (plenty of power like it has had for the last 12 years) and then bog right down. If you hold it at WOT it will bog and then surge and bog again.

To me, and my dad, it sounds like its starving for fuel or like something is preventing it from revving high (like the limiter). However, it does not have any other signs that the service manual says that go along with a faulty rev limiter.

What I have done so far.

1) Topped of the take with fresh fuel and added a can of dry gas.

2) Checked compression and got 140psi on the forward cylinder and 145-150psi on the aft(rear) cylinder.

3) I have taken out the RAVE valves and cleaned and inspected them (never have done that before as I did not know they were a yearly maintenance item)

4) Checked and cleaned the filter. It was clean.

5) New Plugs

Next step?

I'm looking the Service manuals and I am looking towards the carbs. or maybe the rev limiter. How easy is it to clean the needle valves with still on the craft?

Welcome to the seadoo forum Petey.
It sounds like you need to remove the carburetors and clean them. If you're careful and don't tear or damage the diaphragms you won't need to buy a rebuild kit. Pay attention to the internal filters too. If you have gray fuel lines you need to replace them with black fuel lines available from auto parts stores like Auto Zone. Measure the length you need and bring a sample with you so you get the correct size. Replace one at a time so you don’t get them mixed up. If you need clamps replace them too. Use small stainless steel clamps also from the auto parts store.
