after getting info from you guys I am going to replace the motor in the 97 GTS. My latest compression readings are now showing less than 80lbs, I do not know if rebuilding is an option, I can not get 5 of the head bolts to turn to open it up, I think she was a salt water baby,,,So a core she is not. I do not want to spend a bunch more on it. can't sell it the way it is. This was a learning lesson

I am wanting to know if I need to do anything special swapping in another 717,, this GTS has the D.E.E.S. will that matter stator wise if I swap in another complete motor and use my electronics box.

now to find a donar motor,

thanks Doug

Core?........

I don't see why head bolts are a problem with a core....They are likely seized from aluminum oxide. I have had a lot of problems with that on my motor.

Anyway, as long as your swapping motor for motor, even an older model 717, the electrical package shouldn't matter. Keep your magneto casing (and stator) for the next motor, unless it's identical to yours.........

unless they accept cores that are this way,,

The 5 or so bolts are just going to twist off,, I am finding that this was a salt water baby,, I am amazed at how corroded the head is when I took the water hoses off..

I will look to ebay or ??? for a replacement

if you are not in a rush, parts prices are about to nose dive on ebay. if bottom end is ok, i would consider buying a good pair of jugs and reboring them and replace the pistons. yes the bolts are going to break off. no, you won't have any problem with the bolts that hold the jugs to the case.
