Hello,

I recently purchased a Rotax 657x motor that had water sitting in the cylinder and rusted.

I called to get pricing on boring/Honing and the machinist asked what type of metal it was. He said he thought they were made out of a material that cannot be machined.

Does anyone know that metal the jugs on this motor are made of?

Thanks in advance,
T

no offense, sounds like you need to contact another shop, they have a sleeve in them. If he has worked with them before he should know, if he has not I would take it to someone that has.

He want's to know if the cylinders have iron sleeves or a nikasil plating. Iron sleeves can be bored (machined) whereas the nikasil plating cannot.
Nikasil is applied directly to the aluminum and if it gets damaged, it must get re-plated and is very pricey. Nikasil plating is common in motorcycle engines but not so much on PWC's. Kawasaki uses nikasil in their 1200 motor. The Yamaha 1200R motor also uses nikasil.

ok,

I guess I should be asking the question:

I have some rust in the jugs of a 657x Rotax motor. Can I bring it to a local machine shop to have it honed/bored? Or do I have to follow some other route to get it fixed? If so what?

Thanks for the responses,
T

bored out

A good machine shop will ask you to either bring the pistons you want to use, or they will order them so they can match the pistons to the cylinders. I had this done last summer. only cost about $40 bucks
