Looking for some opinions and education on 4Tec oil, please.

My Owners Manual (2011 GTI 155 LTD) says to use XPS synthetic blend oil, or 5w-40 or 10w-40 with API service level SM, SL, or SJ.

I did a search in this sub-forum for "oil" and found 0 topics.

Doing some research on oils, the API seems easy, since virtually all oils are up to service level SN, today.

What is surprising to me is that these blends seem to be used in Diesel engines. I did see a high priced oil from Amelie for high performance engines. Any engine producing 50+ HP per cylinder certainly qualifies as high performance to me.

So I was hoping someone could provide a little knowledge about the use of XPS vs other oils. Especially the synthetic blend vs full synthetic.

Thanks,

-Dave

I held off posting in your oil questions because I drive a sc'd ski. I requires a wet clutch compatible oil....like for 4stroke motorcycles. I buy mine at CrackAuto...on sale for about $4 a qt...Valvoline 10w40 4 stroke motorcycle oil.

Would imagine it being perfectly suitable on your non-boosted motor....but I'm a non-credentialed poster...so any info I might relate should be held suspect.

Thanks for the response, Red.

I did not realize that the same crankcase oil was circulated to the SC.

Yes, mine is non-boosted, which is why I am trying to learn about these oils. I can see the 5w vs the 10w, what is the advantage of synthetic blend ( mixed with conventional oil) vs full synthetic and putting a diesel motor oil in a Doo, just seems wrong.

The SC motors need wet clutch compatible. One Problem can happen with full synthetic. The low oil pressure sensors are set at 28 to 35 (hope I remembered these numbers right). Full synthetic flows easy at lower pressure. This sometimes have put people's SeaDoos into limp mode because of low pressure. This may happen. Then you would have to change out the low pressure sensors for lower setting ones.

You can find deals on blended SeaDoo oil. Easier just to stay with OEM oil.

Aha!

That would explain the 40 viscosity requirement as well. A 30 weight at operating temp flows faster than a 40.

Based on what I have found on the old Interweb, the XPS oil is about $2-$3 more per quart. Not enough to warrant a change, but I did not know about the low pressure info.

Thanx

Since you do not have a supercharger any good quality 10W40 engine oil will work synthetic or non synthetic is up to you.

I posted the same question on another forum and I do have the "Super Charged" ski. I was told that I could use Shell's Rotilla T6 synthetic 5w-40 diesel motor oil for it has the proper certifications. I presently use this oil in my diesel truck and it is fairly inexpensive at Walmart.

If you have a supercharged model the oil needs to be JASO MA1 or MA2 rated for wet clutch use this is typically a motorcycle oil.

I usually pay the 80 bucks for the kit from Seadoo. Considering it has the spark plugs, oil and filter all in one, it's a safe bet. It also keeps my local dealer knowing I am a customer. Never know when you will need something serious.

Yeah I use the T6 in my Duramax and dirt bikes also, so it will kinda cool to only have to buy ONE oil brand.

I have seen those kits on e=bay for around 65.00 but I know that I can get the components cheaper by buying them individually.
