587 Rotary Valve Shaft / Crankshaft Question

Hey everyone, I recently picked up a 1996 SeaDoo GTS with a 580 in it. I have searched the forum trying to find an answer for this question, but have not. I got this SeaDoo very cheap, and the previous owner said the rotary valve gear was stripped and needed to be replaced, and I now have the engine completely disassembled. I had read on this forum to make sure that the crank gear in the center of the crankshaft was still centered after the rotary gear stripped, and it appears to be slightly shifted towards the mag side. However, all the pictures I have seen where this has happened the crank gear has been moved completely to one side, instead of just slightly shifted like mine. I have never worked on one of these before, so I am not sure if this could be normal or not. Will this cause the rotary valve gear to strip again if it is only slightly off center? I am trying to get this ski going for as cheap as possible, but I will get a remanufactured crankshaft if completely necessary. I have attached a couple of pictures of the crank gear. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I can't say for sure if it is off center enough to worry about.

I did do a rebuild, early on in my experience, where a brass gear ate itself up. It left brass material "fused" to the crank gear, just slightly here and there. I did my best to get any brass of the crank and was told to put it back together, the new brass gear failed within 45 minutes. More experienced builders said it was due to the smeared residue and that the crank should have been replaced as well. Wasn't my call to reuse the crank and, even running a pick over the splines, you could not feel any lip or rise where the brass color was.

I'm only passing on my experience to see if anyone else has had a similar incident. After seeing the amount of brass shavings in there, the chance the gear might have shifted and the shavings could have damaged the seal(s)???? I would be motivated to look into a new crank.

But this is just my experience and opinion. There are others on here that have much more experience with stripped brass gear scenarios and can give you more educated info.

Good luck.

You will be better off getting a good used crank or even engine from Westside Powersports Seadoo. They are really honest and reasonable on used parts.

I'd look on eBay for an oem rebuilt crank, I've see 580 genuine Seadoo cranks in the box for cheap.

Is it me or does that RV cavity seem dry as a bone? Was there previously oil in this area when disassembled?
