587 or 657?

on my 95 speedster the manual says it has twin 657x motors. one engine was replaced by p.o and the mag cover tag says that motor is a 587. are the mag covers interchangable between the two and is there a way to tell the difference?. I thought I read that you have to stick with the same motors that came with the boat. sorry for all the questions but I am new to these boats. thanks

Common part....

The magneto cover you are asking about, part # 290810146, was used on the 587, 657, and 717 motor.
So, you in your application, you can't go by the cover. :cheers:
