518 in Crankcase seal grooves on fresh rebuild ?!?

Hey everyone,

During the research i have been doing before putting this 787 engine together i noticed some people are putting 518 in the crankcase seal grooves where the crankshaft seals sit. Any reason behind this? I noticed in the manual it doesn’t call for 518 there. I had my crankshaft and counterbalance rebuilt by competitive crankshafts. So my question is should i be putting 518 in the spots shown in the attached picture or install without 518 as per manual?

Thank you!

I did that for a while, with negative results,,,I want everything super dry and clean,,,the case halves and the red seals,,,my theory being,,,that the sealer displaces space,,,and you lose the seal,,,same with the rotary seals…no sealant,,,period.

Thank you for the quick reply! I wont put any 518 then! Question, my rebuilt crank has black seals not red is that typical ?

Colour, no biggie,,,further to my point,,,in our early racing days,,(800 LTD EXPERT…my son the rider, and me the engine builder),,,,,,a mechanic had me putting case sealer on the counter balancer seal,,,I‘d pull the motor apart for a tear down and that seal after just 40 hours on the motor was “mush!”

Thank you for the insight! Really appreciate it! I will continue to put the engine together per manual and use threebond 1211 to seal the cases!

IF you haven't bought it yet, ThreeBond 1184 aka: motoseal, HondaBond YamaBond is better on cases.

Oh damn i have 1211, i have not opened it yet. So i could possibly sell it later on and grab 1184. Is 1184 better for cases ? Its quite difficult to find 1184 here locally in Canada

Yes I prefer the 1184. Which is sold under the other brand names I mentioned. Napa and Autozone typically carry the MotoSeal from Permatex. 1184 is specifically for aluminum to aluminum joints and is fuel resistant making it the preferred crankcase sealant.

I use 1211 on the base gasket and carb base gaskets.

A lot of the performances guys still use 1211 on the cases so it will be fine if you can’t find 1184.

Are those gaskets not dry? Should I be putting a thin layer of 1211 on them?

I am however concerned about the crankcase bolt torque specs, as I believe i might have over torqued the bolts, im using a cheap harbour freight torque wrench that hardly makes a click when it hits the torque specs which makes me worry. But at the same time since its all torqued and i put the 1184 i Dont want to reopen it. How critical is it to be exact on that torque spec for the crankcase bolts ? Is it okay if they might be slightly over torqued ?
