Hi every body. I have a sea doo challenger 2000 with engine 2001 240 EFI. I would like to repair the engine.. piston number 2 is done and the other one's psi is about 119 to 120. The mechanic is telling me the cost is around 4000.00$. Now he said for the same price he has a mercury 250 optimax. Is it good to change the engine for my challenger 2000, 20 feet?.

thank

if your mechanic can get you an Opti 250 for $4k... then let him do it. The 250 Opti is a 3.0L engine. AND... the drive is different. SO, its a total swap. But, if he can do it for $4k... find out if its a new (or rebuilt) engine. Don't let him just swap in a used engine.

Now... if it was me... and it's just one piston that was melted... and no other serious damage... I would do it myself. You can do a full rebuild for under $1500 if you are doing the labor. OR... you could just replace the one bad piston, and re-ring the others... and call it a day. (for a few hundred $$)

I'm with the good DR on both counts: $4K is a bargain, however keep in mind the 250 has a much larger foot print thus installation labor could sky rocket. First course of business would to be sure the 250 will fit. Just FYI, the stock 240 out performs the stock 250.

Nice picture.

You sellin' the 240? I keep thinking that I want the "New" style 240 in my boat, so I can put the smartcraft gauges in. (Then I'd sell my good running older 240 to cover the diff)

Dr,
I'll see what's in storage and PM options.

Rusty flywheel

thanks Dr Honda. I will take your advice. I will try to fix it by myself but now I found a problem
I can't install the lifting eye into the flywheel because is RUSTY

Cool

I would even be interested in something that needs rebuilt, as long as it was complete.

I will keep you in mind when my 240 goes. I am dreading the day as I feel it is a "when" and not an "if" question.

We read all the doom and gloom threads on here and I have to keep reminding myself, that there are so many of these engines still running fine season after season. We only hear about the ones that fail.

I don't want mine to fail until I know I can squeeze a 350 Verado in there! HA!

Indeed this would be the way to go 250 engine that is, search for my thread. I takes a bit more then just buying the engine and dropping it into your boat and making wake. The adaptor plate is bigger, so you have to cut the transom, its also a lot taller too, so you need to modify the engine cover a bit. Search for my thread and you will see the differences. I like the 250 over the 240, it gets out of the hole quicker and doesnt smoke as much as 240 (but that depends on rings, engine wear, oil, injectors, ect)

send me a PM if you have bought or did any work yet, have tons of pics that i can share with you

Hi everybody, First of all, Merry Christmas. I followed your advice, I am trying to fix my engine by myself, the serial engine # is 0E384567. I found that in the "Service Manual" there are 2 designs for oil-drive-gears, Design I, and Design II. I don't know what my design is, or which one I have to use. Also, on the website provided, I found one.

http://shop.tsmperformance.net/Oil-Drive-Gears_c149.htm

Also, I couldn't find "Special Lube 101".

Thanks in advance and have a happy holidays!

Wondering what special oil they are talking about. Can you tell us where you are adding this oil? Is it under the engine? Where the two gears that are cut @ 45° to drive the impeller? Only oil I know if is that oil, and oil inside the impeller nose cone.

Thanks quick_8...The manual said " Lubricate drive shaft spline with special Lube 101 ".

Also There are 2 designs for oil-drive-gears, Design I, and Design II. I don't know what my design is.

Thanks

Fred1965,

What splines are they talking about? I think they are saying lube shaft, (insert joke here) with some type of lube/anti seize so NOT to damage seal(s). Can you pic?
