I bought this boat (2009 155HP Speedster) in the spring and have had a blast with it so far. We were drifting along at 8 mph when the boat made this loud rattle and vibration sound. The engine rpms seemed fine but I had little power. I assumed something got sucked into the jet.

I took the boat home, ran the engine (w water hose) and I'm 100% certain the sound is coming from the jet area not the engine. The rattle and vibration only occur between idle and approx. 4800 rpms - the sound goes away and the boat sounds normal if I rev past 4800.rpms. I inspected the jet intake, impeller and rear cone area with a small telescoping mirror and I did not see any foreign object or any apparent damage.

I'm thinking the wear ring needs to be replaced, maybe a bearing or the oil in the cone?? I've also read that rattling is normal when out of the water so I'm not sure how much I'm hearing is this. Any suggestion/advice is appreciated!

Same thing happened to me when I went out 2 lakes ago, i caught something in my impeller, slowly put it on reverse, and idled to a beach area, went under and removed a branch that was stuck in there... Let us know

I took the boat back out on the water today to show a mechanic-friend the sound and vibration coming from the jet and the boat ran fine - no rattle, vibration, unusual noise etc. Raced around the lake at all speeds having fun..... I guess whatever got sucked up into the jet came out on its own. The rattle I'm hearing running on land must be the normal sound of the impeller with no load on it. thanks for the tip cheappc.

Hi, this happens quite often here for me especially after heavy rain. Best way is driving backwards and stops the engine. Usually after this it will work fine again. Once you know the procedure it will be not an issue any more.
