I purchased a 2008 wake PWC, 215 hp sc model, in March 2008. At 90 hrs, before holidays, asked the dealer to perform 100hr service. I did not want any problems and we would get 20-30 hrs use over the period. At 100hr in a remote place, the dash display said "Supercharger Maintenance" and it continued everytime I started the ski. Then the question arose about what this meant, and the internet search began. After a lot of reviews, it seems as if a number of people had ceramic washer issues in recent years, with it failing and causing some damage. We have ceramic washers on pump seals where I work so I was naturally concerned given the issues we had - good in theory but in practice???
I asked a few dealers and got denial about any issues, and a view that it might be a problem but you should change to metal washers if you have ceramic. I asked what type I had and could not get an answer. Not good diseminationation of product knowledge from the manufacturer to the dealer.
I changed the SC clutch and bearing kit, and it cost $700 for a clutch changeover and labour. I use it offshore and it is not worth the risk and because the dealers could not tell me if I was safe or not or whether I had ceramic washers, I felt at it was better to go thru this process and know what si going on.. I measured the new kit - 2 x metal clutch washers 2.03mm and the cog on the flywheel was 11.0mm. The SC clutch kit that came out from the ski after 130hrs had 11.0mm on the cog and 2.03mm on the original titanium oxide coated metal washers (after 130 hrs). It did not even have ceramic washers but the experts did not even know what it had. So it was a waste of time and money but I have much more peace of mind when out in the ocean. I virtually had no wear on the washers or cog after 130hrs..... FYI.. Appears that regular oil changes with the right oil are the key parameters to preserving the now metal SC washers and cog and bearings. Hope it saves some of you going thru the same process. In future, I will maintain it myself.
