Hey guys,
I just bought a 2008 Seadoo Challenger 180SE that had been sitting for a couple of years. When taking it out it started hesitating at 3-4K and under full throttle it maxed out at around 16 mph before thowing a P1544 Exhaust code. I took it home and siphoned out the old gas. Refilled with ethanol free and a can of sea foam and took it back out today. While it ran better and got up to 35 mph the hesitations were still there and under full throttle it threw the code again. It kinda sounds like it is misfiring when it starts acting up. Any ideas what to check next?? It’s got around 60 hours and is in great condition. New AGM battery. Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Thoughts.

The code you reference is for the throttle body. Specifically the throttle position sensor. (TPS)

I am guessing that it may need to be recalibrated or it is faulty.

On my 2011 the TPS is on the bottom of the throttle body with 2 screws. If taken off, it needs to be recalibrated to mark the useful range of motion. (Idle to full throttle)

If it is reporting bad data the engine will run poorly as the fuel maps will not match the actual position of the throttle.

You need software to do this so you will either need to bring it to a dealer or purchase Candoo and do it yourself.

Outside of this I would also:

1..change the plugs.
2..pressure test the intercooler.

Let us know how you make out.

Cheers,

Thank you for advice! When I search online I am seeing exhaust overheating for that code (P1544). Are you sure the TPS is related? I read where other suggested cleaning out the water holes on J pipe. I will be replacing spark plugs this weekend and going from there. Thanks!!

I am wrong in the code as you are correct it appears to be exhaust temp related.

There is temp sensor on the exhaust can at the riser and I think one in the waterbox.

You can test each with multi-meter for ohms. If you can't find the ohm temp chart online for them, atleast see if they both bring the same reading.

The other thing you can do is buy a laser thermometer and check the can an exhaust temp with it.

If you have legitimately high exhaust Temps you need to check for obstructions in the raw water side of the cooling.

First start with the intake port in the pump. There is a port after the impeller with a screen There.
