2007 GTI SE Speed Indication

I had a dealer replace my steering cable and now the speed indication is messed up, sometimes it reads what appears to be the correct speed, sometimes it drops to 0, and at other times when idling it shows 20 or 30 mph.

I'm guessing there's a loose connection, I pulled apart the 3 pin connector at the rear and reseated it and that didn't make a difference.

From the electrical diagrams I can find online it appears to me that the only other connector involved is right at the display. Is there an easy way to get to that and reseat it? I'd like to check the simple things myself before dragging it 35 miles to the dealer again.

The hood or sun deflector over the cluster snaps on. If you remove it, you can see the back of the cluster and the connection, but it is a secured connection, from what I recall. I wouldn't think you have a bad connection.

Removing the hood/sun deflector is uncomfortable, but easy. You feel like you are going to break it. But if you just pull up on the extended part of it, just above the cluster face, it will release and snap off. Give it a quick pull.

seadoomanuals.net would be a good resource for a free manual to help explain removing the hood and diagnosing your issue.

Thanks for the information.

I just find it strange that the speed readout mysteriously went bad after the dealer worked on it (I assume they had to get into that area to replace the steering cable). I'll try to get that sun deflector off and re-seat the connector.

I finally had some time to look at it some more. I re-seated the connector on the back of the gauge (and had previously re-seated the connector coming from the speed sensor), and nothing has changed.

Are those the only two connectors between the speed sensor and gauge?

Never mind - I finally got my hands on a proper wiring diagram.

I am not a great electrical guy, but I am thinking your sender, or the unit that senses the wheel spinning has gone bad? It is getting an erroneous signal sometimes when stopped, as well as moving. That little wheel and sensor are probably all one unit. Maybe the shop manual can take you Thou some diagnosis for the sender?
