I noticed my engine compartment was flooded on my last trip so I believe the bilge pump needs to be replaced. I'll be testing that out shortly to see if it's toast or not, but in the meantime I noticed that the BRP part (204471431) is discontinued. I know I could probably find an exact replacement from various parts suppliers (ebay and amazon seem to be good sources), but I wonder if I could just buy a standard marine pump (like a Shoreline brand) from Amazon? Any suggestions out there?

Hey,

On my 2004 sportster the old bilge pump was no good. So, bought a generic one (round), clipped the old connector and joined up the appropriate wires. It does work, but I would recommend locating a 'oval' style base, because my old base is riveted to the hull. I did not want to drill them out, re-seal the holes, and install a new one. My old one is a Rule-Mate 500 GPH with an automatic switch contained in it.

Here is it. It's completely seized. I tried attaching a 12V source directly to it and not a gig. The motor shaft is seized. I suppose that any Rule with a similar rating would do fine. Would be nice to have the same base, but I guess that's a nice to have really.

Amazon has a Rule 500 GPH fully automated bilge pump... slightly different form factor. Maybe this would do. I'd have to reconfigure the harness of course.

The new Rule 500 was relatively easy to install. The wire colours were the same so it was idiot proof. I used the electrical connector from the old pump. I had to drill out the old base as it was riveted in place. I secured the new base in place using a couple of stainless screws in the old rivet holes. Voila... works like a charm.
