2006 Speedster 4TEC Speedometer

We have only used the boat 6 times. This last weekend the speedometer reading "seemed" to changed from one day to the next day by about 5 knots, ie, 15 was reading 20. We were judging this by the pull on the wake borders, the height of the wake and the angle of the boat at different speeds. I Might have noticed it momentarily sticking at a speed before this new adjustment started happening.

I am guessing that the speedometer is made up of the mini spinning paddle wheel on the bottom of the port transom and some electronic device in the instrument panel.

The paddle wheel seems to be spinning freely.

Is it a common problem that the device might go out of adjustment...Is it adjustable?

Thanks, Michael

Speedometers that use a paddle wheel at the back of the boat are notoriously inaccurate. Many on this forum refer to them as dream-o-meters. The newer boats with digital dash use gps for speed which is more accurate and reliable.

I have found that the speedometer is accurate in nice flat calm water, but when towing for water sports, or navigating in wind or current it can be way off.

It is not adjustable, just make sure then wheel spins freely at the back of the boat and is clean. Other than that not much you can do. If it is necessary to accurately control your speed use a hand held gps or even a smart phone app.
