Hey all. The 06 Challengers with the 215 SCIC engine have a basic plastic airbox intake at the rear port storage area right next to the battery cut-off switch. An intake tube connects it to the supercharger. I've noticed that in later years (2008 and up I believe), that was replaced with an open free-flow cone filter much like you see in Cold-Air Intake kits on cars, and located near the starboard side of the engine. I'm thinking there must have been some advantage for the manufacturer to make that change. Perhaps increased or more efficient air-flow into the supercharger - although same engine and same horsepower. I'm very curious if anyone had tried to add a cone-style filter to the air intake on a 2005/06 Challenger or modify it in anyway. Thanks.

Nobody has replaced the black airbox on an 05-07 Challenger with a open cone air filter type? Wonder if I should attempt it, or just 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' ?

I think that would be the consensus.
Sometimes changing to the CAI has no benefits other than the sound you get.

Although any tuner will tell you the SC/Turbo love fresh air and the more the better!
A lot of the jet ski with SC pay big money for the upgrade can't see why boat would be different other than chances of it sucking water if boat sinks.

:ack:

I have a 2008 speedster 155hp (same 4-tec, no SC) and it also has the exposed air filter like you describe, while I remember seeing older 155's with the air box. So change is not specific to only an SC breathing improvement. And can't see it getting any colder air, since it is breathing standing air right next to the hot engine.

Looks a little simpler and less costly to manufacture, and may breath slightly better. Since I think the air box has no filter in it, longer piping vs filter restriction.

I also read somewhere the air box has the rectifiers in it to be cooled in the air stream, so may have to be carefull disconnecting it, that they don't overheat.

i have an '07, and i was wondering the same thing. but i'd like to see some real-world numbers and improvement in performance before i start straying from stock...

Some of the sites that sell the 4-tec plenum filter kit, that basically looks like the revised seadoo design, claim: dyno tested to add 5hp, 100rpm, 2mph, etc.

I would be skeptical ... why did Seadoo not advertised the improvement to HP on the revised models, to show some additional advancements? Is mine really 160hp but they were to lazy to make new stickers? Would make perfect marketing sense, just like the car companies constantly creep up their HP with tweaks on the same basic engine.

Even the senior tech at the dealer didnt know

I asked the technician at my dealer in Orillia (Leatherdale Marine), and he could not think of why they made the change. Only possible explanation he provided was that perhaps the part (airbox) was no longer made, or BRP wanted to standardize on the air filter design - which fits what Steve_Cay notes about 'simpler and less costly', but the improved breathing must have some benefit? The rectifier is simply repositioned in the 2008 and up design from what I've seen in the drawings.

Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps I'll wait until somebody tries it out of curiosity or necessity first.

I just pulled the trigger on a Riva power filter kit and their oil catch can breather system.

I will hopefully have time next weekend to install them, along with a Solas Concord prop... I'll report back!
