2005 Sprtster Jet Pump Grease.....

Hello everyone,
just joined the forum. I`ve owned a pair of `94 GTX`s since `97. Now I`m working on a 2005 Sporster. When checking the jet pump grease the grease was clean. However the cone was not full of grease and what grease there was was pushed back into the cone away from the bearing. I looked for a thread on jet pump bearing grease and service but did not find too much about it. Does the cone have to be packed full of grease? Does the pump need to be disassembled to grease the pump bearing properly? Any info will be helpful.
Thanks in advance- Mark

The cone on the end should hold about 26 grams of synthetic grease. there are 2 "0" rings on the cove that should be in good condition too before assembly. If there isn't any signs of water,(milky white color) you should be ok. If it milky white you will need to disassemble the pump and service it with a new seal on the impeller side and replenish the grease. Then a leak test should be done on the cone to see if it holds 10 psi, for at least 5 minutes. It might be that the cone just needs a small amount of grease in the cone.

Pump Bearing Grease........

Thanks for the info. Since my GTX`s had oil I understood the oil flowing into the bearing. With the grease I can`t see how it can really get into the bearing very well without some way to push it in since there doesn`t seem to be much of a opening for the grease to penetrate the side of the bearing. I was thinking of building a plate to seal against the o rings with a zerc fitting in the middle to pump grease into the bearing, like a wheel bearing repacker. The only concern would be the pressure hurting the forward seal. If just pushing the grease against the back of the bearing with a finger is adequate then great. Thanks again, great forum
