i recently bought a 2005 180 challanger and after inspecting the boat i noticed the intake grate is barely on the screws are broke off inside and only being held on by silicone. i was thinking of running without a intake grate at all and just filling the holes where the broken screws were. Is this a bad idea??? i know it could suck up a rock but to be honest i have sucked up a decent size rock with the grate on...any thoughts would be appreciated...

I'm almost certain unread that water passes through the grate to cool the engine. Like a heat exchanger. If that is the case, than no.

Someone that knows for certain will chime in,,,

i dont think the intake grate does that its just a piece of aluminum that bolts on i think you may be speaking of the ride plate...

Based on experience, I would highly not recommend running without a grate. I am not sure about the boats, but on a pwc there were control issues along with rock suction.

To clarify, the propulsion system is everything, it is your cooling, thrust and steering. In the turns without a grate, the machine can slide unexpectedly and to add there is a slight drop off in pull while in turns. I would figure out a way to get it fastened.

The ride plate behind the grate is the heat exchanger. I would keep the grate. Pull it off and get the broken bolts out. You may have to drill a small hole in the broken bolt and use a broken screw extractor. I know on my jet ski, 2 bolts are held in with inserts and the other 2 are thru the hull held on with a locking nut inside the hull. Someone hopefully might know for sure.

Post some pics ;)

I'm not really sure we're all on the same page. if you can save it I would, it's not so much for rocks because you should be in a couple of feet of water before cranking her up, and don't power beach your boat . It's there to stop those big sticks, weeds and floating debris to an extent. You might be alright till you get a stick logged in there and then you may regret it.
