Hi everyone, first time posting so let me know if I am doing something wrong. I'm looking to add a stereo to my boat and because it did not have one from the factory, I want to run the hot wire to a source that comes alive when I put the key on the post. Is this possible or feasible? Thanks

Some of the boats have a plug in the helm that was meant for aux gauges. You can use that.

A normal head unit... yes. A high power one... no. With that said... most head units will have you put power direct to the battery, and then it will have a "Trigger" or "power on" wire to turn the unit on and off. That wire is low current.

If your boat has is... the plug will be an oval shaped plug, with nothing connected to it.
