2004 Speedster 200 Won't plane out

Hello all,

2 weeks ago, I had my boat out and got the starboard intake duct clogged with weeds. After removing them, I could not get the boat to plane out. It had been planing out fine all day until that point. After unclogging the duct, the port engine would rev smoothly to full throttle, and the starboard engine would match the port till about 5700, then jump to rev limit. Assuming I didn't get the ducts cleaned out well enough, we idled back to the dock and trailered up. I found 1 weed wrapped around the port impeller shaft. The next weekend, I pulled the weed off, double checked both jets/ducts, and threw the boat back in the water. Same problem. It would "bow up" but it wouldn't finish planing out. Finally, I moved all 4 people and the cooler into the bow, after about a minute of full throttle, we finally got on plane and reached about 51 MPH.

My question is; can one time of clogging up the intake screw the pump up enough to not plane out? Being my first jet boat, was the performance just not good to begin with, so that was the final straw? Is there anything else with my boat that could cause my symptoms? When I bought the boat earlier this year, I did all the normal routine maintenance one would do to a standard engine.

I currently have both pumps off and am replacing wear rings and impellers. I have attached pictures of both pumps, and am curious to know if they are bad enough to cause my problems?

The wear rings look like they're done and the on dinged up impeller is definitely due for a repair or replacement.

Just a heads up, if you're browsing our wear ring selection on pwcmuscle you will see stainless steel ones. I'd recommend going with plastic (OEM or aftermarket) and bypassing the others.

Wear rings are designed to be sacrificial, and judging by the damage they took, your impeller would be shredded if you went with a stainless steel wear ring.

Not to hijack this thread, but is there a difference (aside from price) be tween the OEm and aftermarket wear rings? I plan on swapping mine out this winter. Any particular brands to avoid?

Thanks for the help everyone. All the banter about stainless ones scared me away. So I went with plastic ones from impellers.com, because I could order the impellers and wear rings from the same place. The wear rings actually came from Inland Jet Sports, the price seemed more reasonable than Sea Doo's.

The OEM ones came out well (when I found the other 2 screws behind the removable water passage!). The new ones went in well, but after installation, there was a consistent .025" gap all the way around in both pumps. Shop manual says .014 max. I am currently in deliberation with them to see what the deal is, whether its a manufacturing defect, or if that is the spec they manufacture to. When measured, the new impellers match the still nicely machined OD of the OEM impellers extremely well. They also fit VERY nicely into the uninjured portion of the old wear ring extremely well.

In further news, I ended up installing them because it was a 100 degree weekend here in Minnesota, so I HAD to be on the water. The boat planes out pretty well, the cavitating is gone. Overall the boat handles MUCH better. I can't help but think, who much performance is lost because I was too hung up on spending the extra $70 for OEM wear rings? Seems pretty silly in retrospect, considering I was already into it for $550 in parts...

Aside from them not really being available, what is everyone's opinion on bronze wear rings? I work in a machine shop, and would have zero trouble manufacturing some rings that could work as well, if not better than the Inland Jet Sports rings I bought!
