I've just developed a new squeeling/screeching sound when I first start the motor. The sound only lasted for ~20 sec. at first, but now it lasts closer to ~45-60 sec. It sounds like a fan belt tensioner pulley bearing, but I don't see any belts on the exterior of the motor. It sounds like the noise is coming from the rear of the motor. Any thoughts?

Doesn't that year have an alternator? Mine is older but I assume you have a belt on it. Maybe it's worn or loose?

Thanks for the reply. I just went through the service manual and cannot find anything referring to an alternator or belt on the 240 EFI. I'm a little dumbfounded on this one...

I have a 2000 240 efi. it has a magneto (dynamo?) not the alternator (sorry I don't have the terminology down). as I understand it, at 2001 1/2 (seriously? what's up with that?) they switch to an alternator. from the year of your boat I think you would have the later version of the engine. do you have the manual that matches your year? I'll take a look and let you know if I find anything of interest

I have an 03 Speedster 160 with the 240 EFI and mine has a belt right on top, and just the last few times out mine is also making a squeal noise for about 15 seconds or so then goes away. I greased tensioner grease fitting but it is still squealing, I'm guessing it's the original belt on there so it's probably that or one of the pulleys is starting to wear out. We must have the same engine.
