2003 Sportster wear ring replacement question

I am in the process of installing a new wear ring in my 2003 155hp vortec sportster. Apparently the 2003 model is the one year they used composite pumps instead of metal, and there are 4 retaining screws that were through the composite housing and into the wall of the original wear ring.

Of course the new wear ring does not have holes pre-drilled, has anyone just installed the replacement wear ring and not messed with drilling and using the retaining screws in their 2003 composite pump? As tight of a fit as the new wear ring was, I don't see how the screws were really doing much. How importment is it that I use them?

thanks,
Gary

I have the 04 speedster with the same pump. The screws are good to have. I am in the process of doing my pump as well and plan to drill a smaller starter hole not too deep for each screw. Don't drill all the way thru though and put the screws back in. You don't want that ring spinning.

Thanks for the reply. My concern was drilling through the new wear ring. I just went slow and carefull. All went well, screws back in place, all reassembled and ready for water.

I have 2 oem rings for sale, brand new. They will fit the 155mm plastic pumps. PM me for details
