2002GTI Tuned Pipe

Does anyone have any idea if a tuned pipe can be repaired. There is a leak on both of my 2002 GTI,s. I was told this is a defect but Honda had not recalled it. It is on the top of the pipe near the front end and on the engine side of the pipe. The dealer repaired it with a filler. It blew out the first time we used them about 30 minuets apart. Great Repair!! Both engine compartments filled up with water. I wonder if they could be drilled and tapped and a brass plug installed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Tuned Pipe

I'm going to assume when you say HONDA that you actually mean SEADOO or BOMBARDIER. I'm also going to assume that your pipes are leaking at the caps(4 per pipe) welded on at the factory. Remove your pipes, find a good alluminum welder and have them repaired. The proper way to repair them is to grind or cut off the factory casting caps and weld on new plates.( welding over the top of the old plates doesn't last very long. The welder I use charges me $60.00 to repair a pipe correctly. Also, make sure you have ALL 4 caps repaired( not just 1 or 2). There are 2 kinds of these casting caps......
the ones that are leaking and the ones that are going to be leaking!!!!

JB weld....

I had the same problem on my 1997 model 787........but I'm cheap. I pull the pipe off, got out my dremel tool, ground them all out till I was into good aluminum, then JB welded with aluminum screen. Then, smoothed it all out with a sander and painted.

No leaks, been through 5 tanks of gas!.........so, great, cheap fix.

Problem with welding. In my experience with this issue, this is a problem that occurs through aluminum oxide caused by the minerals (sodium chloride) leaching into the metal from heat transfer. The total wall thickness and integrity of the pipe is getting thin. So, if you weld today, you may have another leak tomorrow....................:cheers:

That is even beter as long as it will last a couple of years it will be worth the trouble of repairing it. :cheers:
