Yet another issue with what seems to be the worlds worst boat engine. Finally got this thing going after going through the supposed $3000 worth of work done on the boat by the previous owner, only to have a new problem. After sitting you can bump the key and the boat starts and idles great. You can take it out and it runs amazing. Smooth acceleration and great power. But once you shut it off, it won’t restart for a few hours, and when it does, it’s the same thing. Bump the key, idles and runs great until you shut it off. No alarms and not running hot. You can put your hand on the engine. Tried disconnecting power and unhooking computer to clear it but it doesn’t help. I unhooked temp sensor, still no start. It’s got to be a sensor of some sort telling the motor not to run, I just don’t have a clue which one. I pulled plugs and it is getting spark. They also look like they’re getting some fuel. Just pulled it in off the lake so I haven’t put a fuel pressure gauge on it, but I just replaced the high pressure pump and it runs too good for it to be a fuel issue. It is the 2001 engine. Any thoughts?

Have you ever had the injectors serviced? It sounds like you have at least one sticking /leaking open. Dumping gas into engine. As in a flooded carb engine. Most big cities have a shop that can service them on a flow bench. Pour-in-the-tank miracle fluids are a waste of time and money and can damage your engine. Cost is about $25 each x6. A new set is about $800.

Have you checked all the small black hoses that run around the front of the engine? These are the hoses that collect pooled gas in the engine so it can be burned. A leak or break will cause lean conditions and hard to start. As old as these engines are, the hoses are a little brittle. (I have the same engine.)

Have you checked and adjusted the tps? Mine has caused this same issue. Dumping excess gas into engine at idle causing flooded condition. You hope it is something else. Stupid expensive part.

If it’s a flooding issue, I suppose I should be able to pull the plugs and turn it over a few times to blow the cylinders out then reinstall and it should start. The plugs don’t look that wet when I pull them out but I don’t want to rule it out as a possible issue. When I can get back to the boat I’ll check some of this out. Thanks

Plugs out and cranking can help some, but it is a fire hazard if you are cranking by key. A spark and BOOM!

Use remote start button (for a car). Give WOT. Then turn engine over. Key is OFF, so no spark.
