Hey everyone, I'm completely new to jet skis and would really appreciate some advice from people who know what they're talking about!

For $400 I agreed to buy a 2002 GTX and trailer, both of which are supposed to be in good condition and have seen little use (the jet ski is currently located in Green Bay, so I won't take possession for at least a week). The motor is blown on the GTX, so I'm wondering what you guys would recommend. I basically see three options:

  • Replace the motor and keep the Sea-Doo
  • Replace the motor and sell the Sea-Doo
  • Sell the Sea-Doo and trailer

I realize a lot depends on the condition of the Sea-Doo when I get it, but for $400, I figured I can at least get my money back out of it. Considering the price I paid and the variables at play, what option would you guys recommend? So basically I'm trying to figure out if it's worth fixing up or if I should just sell it off. I've done quite a bit of searching online and still haven't been able to get a good grasp for how much these are worth.

Also, how easy is it to replace a Sea-Doo motor? My dad is a former jet-engine mechanic so mechanical experience isn't an issue.

It all depends on what GTX it is. There were 4 different flavors of the GTX in 2002. GTX 4-tec, GTX DI, GTX RFI, GTX 951 Carb. About the only one I would even consider putting a motor in would be the 951 Carb. Maybe a 4-tec, but I have zero experience with them. Most of the time when a DI breaks they get parted out. The RFI's are good machines when there running, but can be a bitch to troubleshoot. Same with the DI's, but even more so of a pain to troubleshoot. Now for $400 you really can't go wrong if the ski is clean. Especially if it comes with a trailer. Check out shopsbt.com and there you can get a general idea of what it will cost to put a motor in it.
