I have a chance to buy a 02 RX di. Guy said it has motor problems. Said it is all together and not taken apart and doesn't want to mess with it. Wants $750 for ski trailer and cover. Are there any common issues with these or anything I should look for when I go to look at it other than compression test? Worst case if I have to put a motor in it will it still be worth it? What is this set up worth in good running clean condition? Thanks

Lots of common issues, but if you can get it cheap enough, you can recover your investment in parts.

Aside from common cosmetic issues, some would include:

plugged up fuel system, & or bad fuel pump.
fuel & air pressure issues
sensor issues that trip the maintenance & limp modes. (tough to diagnose)
bad voltage regulators
compression issues (like they all can have)
And top of my list would be bad crankshafts. some are bad enough where you can feel the roughness by hand turning the PTO.

There are more things, but those would be my short list. ;)

I can get it for $600. I'm going to go get it this evening. I hope the pics are recent because it looks very clean. I have heard the oil pumps on the 02 models sometimes fail and should be replaced with the newer model? Any truth to that? Think $600 is a good buy? What are these worth in good running condition?

DI skis are kind if a beast all their own. Harder to diagnose and cost more to fix. Fuel pump pressure is crucial on that ski and fuel ops aren't cheap. Fantastic skis when they are running. No fun at all when they are not.

You will have to determine good base engine via compression test and then go from there. Fuel pressure is something like 117 psi and it MUST be that high to run right. Along with pressure you just also have volume. Many aftermarket pumps can't do both.

Repairing and selling iPads, iPhones and Mini iPads.

Did you pick it up? If its clean, hard to go wrong at $600. MPEM & trailer might be worth that.
I would agree with Coastie though. they can be expensive & frustrating to repair. I have a 2002 RXDI that I recently finished. it had a ton of hidden problems & I have pretty much what its worth stuck into it, maybe even a little more. Running great now though. Has to be one of the best starting engines on the water with the direct injection. I don't think it cranks for more than 1 - 1.5 seconds every time.

Yep. Got home late last night with it. It is really clean with only minor scratches on bottom of hull. Top half hardly any scratches. Came with seadoo factory cover in great shape and two keys. 121 hrs on it. VTS works. Looking forward to getting started on it.

Wow! That is a great looking ski!! I have been wanting to sell what I have and get a pair of this exact ski. Hope it just something minor.

Lake Gaston...One of my closest friends has a lake house on Gaston. I love that lake!! I've been a little wobbly at the wobble.

Thanks, yeah I've been there more times than I can count. My place isn't too far from there.

I'm hoping I get lucky on this ski. The guy had pulled the head plate off and said the cyl was toast. So I couldn't do a comp test there when I bought it. He had some of the bolts back in it. I pulled it back off today. The cyl and pistons look ok. Nice and smooth. Front one has a few very light scratches in them. I'm hoping it's something simple. I'm hoping fuel pump. I found out when I spun it over he had disconnected the fuel line to the fuel rail. Gas came out when spinning over. But didn't shoot out that quickly. Seemed kinda weak, but I wasn't expecting it either so I stopped. Going to get the head tightened up to check comp for my self. I'll keep everyone updated.

Thanks! Well I didn't look close enough. The top side of the piston near the RAVE looks questionable. Going to pull the head tonight or tomorrow and see what's going on with it. I also noticed the oil in the reservoir is golden color. This ski should take the blue BRP synthetic right? Would using the wrong oil cause it to burn up a piston?

the brp full synthetic is red. brp changed oil companies and went from golden to red. but yes using wrong oil will shorten engine life. full synthetic api-tc only. not sure if that was the case with yours.

Thanks. Not 100% sure what the po had been using. I know the nearest seadoo dealer to them was 2+ hours away. Just guessing they were using something else. I'm going to drain the old oil out and fill with the BRP synthetic just to be sure.

yep better to be safe than sorry. here s where i get mine and super fast shipping.

i would recommenced changing the oil filter and bleed system.

Not too bad shipped to my door. I should be ok on oil for a little while. A guy I know just moved two months ago. Sold his skis. When he was packing the rest of his stuff he forgot he had 3 cases of oil. He's said he would take $150 for all 9 gallons. I jumped on it!

Super deal!!

Well looks like it's going to need a whole motor  pulled the head off tonight. Connecting rod bearing on crank is toast. Guess it's off to SES.

We seem to have a rash of 951DI crank failures on the forum right now & I have two of them.

I am starting to think that these failures might have more to do with rusting/failing bearings than they do with too much power? I am probably out of my league making an accusation like that, as I am somewhat new to the DI's just last year, but I do have my third one tore down & I have to tell you all three had evidence of rusted bearings. I wonder if the lack of fuel going through the case could have anything to do with it. I wouldn't think so. In the DI, all it breathes is warm humid air with oil mixed in & the air intake horns are in a terrible position (IMO) I think there's a lot more moisture trapped in these engines than we might think. I might start fogging my DI's air box after every ride....... takes 15 seconds. Hhhhmmmmmm.

SES seems to do a really good job with the 951's. I've had really good results from them in the past.
Maybe there is something to their claim of 60% better oiling.

Glad to hear that. I have used him a few times before but never with a 951. He did a 717 for me about 3 years ago. My friend has it now and it stays used all summer and is still strong.

Just paid him to rebuild 2 951's. One for this ski and one for the 00 XPL I'm bringing back to life. Packing the motors and hopefully be on their way to his shop by the end of the week. Went with his premium 2 year no fault motors

I was thinking......when I drop this motor back in when I get it back from SES, will I need to have the tps reset?

As long as you don't monkey with the throttle body, or replace it. you will not need too. The timing "should" be checked however as i am guessing you are getting a new crank, but in reality, the web that holds the timing key for the mag flywheel can't be changed, so I doubt your timing will be off. SES is using your original case & cylinder, correct?
