2001 vs 1996

I have a buddy that has a 1996 GTI with the 720 motor that needs a rebuild. He also has a 2001 GTI with the 720 that he has dropped off the trailer. The question he has is will the 720 out of the 2001 work in the 1996 or is the electrical different?

Thanks, I thought it would but I wasn't sure about the electronics.
