Good Morning,

Let me start by Thanking you for so many informative posts. They have helped me in countless ways.
I have a 2001 Seadoo Islandia powered by a Merc 240.
Last year I had problems with the boat restarting after the first start of the day. I was able to physically open the throttle plate by the linkage and it would start. Well, last year in July, I broke a tine off the hydro gate and the piece was sucked thru the drive. Never the less the engine blew. I have since rebuilt the engine and complete drive overhaul. Fired the motor and ran it the other day. Boat handled, accelerated and ran like it should. I mixed extra oil directly into the fuel as per the re-builders instructions.
As I said, the engine ran fine. Pulled up to the the fuel pump, shut her down, fueled and when I tried to restart...nothing..again.
To put things into perspective, when the engine was out, we checked all the injectors, fuel pumps, ECM Vapor canister, and replaced the reed valves. I was told the injectors were okay, just needed cleaning. When the issue happened this past weekend, i did what I always do, opened the throttle and the engine fired. It is smoking in my opinion, excessively, but it could be from the extra oil in the tank, but that would be a darker smoke, not white. I have since changed the Port side Temp sensor, ran the blower for at least 5 minutes before trying, but nothing. Now here is what I have found. When the engine does not start, and it is hot or cold, if i immediately pull the plugs, I can actually see little puffs of white pulsing smoke coming from the cylinder I removed the plug from. Almost as if the injectors are pulsing when the main battery power is on, even if the key is off. By some of your previous posts, I thought it may have been the port side temp sensor, putting the TPS into a very rich condition as to not lean out the cylinder. Could this be the dreaded TPS? Since everything was changed, and or renewed, to end up with the same problem as before the engine blew, leads me to believe it is still the same issue that had nothing to do with the replacement. I have no problem changing the TPS or anything else you may suggest, but I am at wits end. I can tell you that when the engine does start, and than i turn it off, you can see white smoke continuing to come out of the thru hull exhaust pipes. Once I run the boat for a while, everything clears, but on return thru that long ride thru the lagoon, the smoke returns. The engine runs great. Plenty of throttle, planes well. Plugs come out wet with raw fuel. If i change the plugs, they fuel foul as well. If i open the throttle by hand down by the linkage, it fires.
Please, any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

I would assume you have the same engine as mine, I have a sea doo challenger 2000 M2 240 EFI gen. 1 engine with VST... First of all, 2 stroke engine always smokes white smoke too.... but keep on running and don't put oil in your fuel tank as oil is enough in the reservoir to keep it running on 2 stroke.... I have the same problem with you before when I run for about an hour or two, when I turn off the engine, it won't start and after blowing air and resting for 30-45 mins, it will fire back up again, and I'm trying to figured out what's the problem and I check the TPS with ohmeter thru manual specs and it is good and I check the air temp sensor and it's not working and when I changed to a new one, runs like a champ right now... no more problem with hot or cold starting anymore... So in your case please check your TPS sensor with manual specs and adjust as desired... buy a manual or here print it out here if you are a premium member and just print all the manuals out and test it before you buy a new parts.

Do you have a part number and suppliler for the air temp sensor? This is the one on the port side?

When you checked the tps, did you check with an analog meter? The needle is more likely to show failure of the tps than a digital meter will. Remember- looking for SMOOTH motion of the meter needle throughout the throttle range; not just the endpoint voltages. Everything you describe fits my failed tps.

yes definitely, Tim is right to check your TPS, I bought a wire on ebay to check your TPS, and I used a digital voltmeter and follow the manual on proper procedure and you'll know right away if your TPS is busted or not...

The test harness makes the test easier, but just use an analog meter.

When you checked the injectors. were they serviced on a flow bench? That is really the best way to have them serviced. The best $120 I spent on my boat. Performance is up, fuel consumption is down. Smoke is down. I use Mercury Quicksilver Premium 2-stroke oil.

What is your idle rpm in the water? It seems like you may need to go thru the procedure of setting your throttle arm and idle speed. This can also affect your ignition timing.

Just for grins & giggles, try this:
When your engine dies, open the cap to the large oil tank. Try to restart the engine.
What happens?

Tim75,

I will let you know on Monday what happens. At this point, It has to be something I have not touched as of yet, and that could be one of those things.

Have a good weekend!

Joe
