My jet boat starts limiting the revs.at 2500 rpms and smokes a lot , raw fuel smell. wont pass 5 mph. in the water and out the water. It did the problem a couple of times last year and i use to put the throttle down completley and then back up quickly to the max and it stopped doing it for a wile. But now it is doing it all the time. I need help.

i disconected the rev-limiter box and accelerates ok. I dont know if the rev-limiter is bad or not, how to check it?

There should be a procedure in the electical side of your service manual. You can download a service manual online. Be sure to find the service manual and not the owners manual.

Btw i seen your info below your name. I am from Palm Bay, grew up off Fallon.

I would check under the electrical or troubleshooting section, find the component you want to test and it should list the resistance for that part. For example when I was having the same issue with my boat I went to the electrical section in the service manual found the trigger and found what the resistance should have been. It walked me through and told me to check for example the red and yellow wire and told me it should have xxx of resistance.

At this point if you have a multimeter you need to find in the manual what the resistance should be for the component you want to check and verify it.

2001 seadoo challenger 240 EFI is limiting @ 2500 rpms.

I just tested the trigger and its good. The results are 1260 ohms each test. The resistance ohms range is 1100-1400 according to the mercury service manual. Could it be that the rev-limiter is bad? Helppp

Okay well that's good news and I'm sure you tested all three spots of the trigger correct?
I imagine it could be the Box you're speaking of. I do remember that there was something funny about the way the Seadoo boat communicated with the Mercury engine. In order to rule out the Seadoo side of it you can bypass it by plugging an ignition switch directly to your engine via the plug that comes from your ignition switch that's already on the boat to the engine.

So basically you're going to be disconnecting the wire harness from your console to your engine and plugging in a stand-alone ignition switch. If I remember the plug is in the engine compartment. You may be able to find someone local who works with Seadoo or Mercury and they may have one of those switches already made up.

I don't like to throw parts that stuff and it sounds like you don't either so I would try to find a procedure to test that rev limiter box you're speaking of.

I did install all original New parts: TPS sensor ,air temp. sensor, new spark plugs, new battery, NEW stator, new prop, new wear ring, etc. etc.

I took the boat in the water today and it worked fine with rev-limiter disconnected. I plugged the rev-limiter back and it wont go over 2500 RPMS. ANy idea ???

rev- limiter at 2500 rpms. Problem.

I installed the new rev-limiter and it did not do anything different. The engine is limiting at 2500 rpms. I just disconected it, and it ran fine the hole weekend. It just takes a little to shut off when you turn the key off. And it smokes a lot at idle speed. I wish i can get some help in this forum. Thank you

Open the starboard side (steering wheel side) windshield compartment and take out the storage bucket. Under that bucket you will find a black box. That box is called a throttle guardian. Find the wire that is black with a yellow tracer and cut it. I recommend adding a quick connect to it so you can easily plug it back in if it does not help.

Seems to me the coil is getting a false ground and causing the rev limit your feeling.

So cut the wire and try it. If you cut it and don't add a quick connect then at least put some electric tape on the cut ends to prevent them touching each other or anything else.

i need help what is the by pass switch called and where can i get one online?
