I have a 2001 challenger 1800 m2 210. Engine will crank but not start. New spark plugs. I have fuel up to the fuel primer, but hoses dry after primer. Fuel filter seems clean enough to allow flow. I get no fuel when cranking. 3 amp fuse is good. Repair manual does not give me voltage or testing options for primer. Is there a way to test primer for proper operation or do i just replace it? Could something else cause the primer to not operate like bad switch box or bad safety switch? Seems like it works with starter?

Yes... it's only on while cranking. Next to the fuse, there is a relay. It can be bad also. But if you put 12v directly to the pump... it should "Pump."

If it does: Then make sure the fuse, relay, and the connections are all good.

If it doesn't: Replace the pump .

With that said... I would also make sure the hose to the carbs is clear. (just blow into it) AND... if you want a back-up.... and/or a way to test things... then you can put a regular outboard primer bulb before the pump. That way you can manually prime the system.

Thanks Dr. Honda, didn't want to put 12v to it until I got some advice, didn't want to damage it. Any idea on primer bulb part #? I'm thinking as long as it is big enough inlet/outlet for fuel hose it won't restrict flow? The bulbs I see for merc outboards have a 5/16 i.d. Will check size of line I have. Only options I see are 5/16 or 3/8 for generic bulbs.

Whats wrong with this pic? Seems previous owner installed carbs in wrong order. Mid carb should be top with enrichment valve coming from top not mid carb. I have fuel flow to valve but not past. thinking i need to swap carbs and orient valve correctly. Valve bracket missing.

Yep.......

I'd pop them off, and give them a good cleaning while you are in it.

As far as the primer bulb... the 5/16" generic will be fine.

Ok, I installed the primer bulb and rearranged the carbs. Motor started right up (its alive!!!!) but backfires from starboard exhaust when I start it. Other than that it idles and revs without issue. Thinking carbs need to be adjusted or do i just need to run it in the water and it will work itself out? All 6 cylinders got warm. Only ran it for 10-15 seconds with no water. It was getting dark and didn't want to drag out the hose.

I would put it in the water, to load the engine, before getting too crazy. But generally... these engines will run perfectly when the carbs are set to book spec.

I put it in the water yesterday and had to drag it back in after 10 minutes. Glad I didn't go far. Engine died like it ran out of gas and would not restart. It would only go 10mph at full throttle. No more backfire though. I think it was just excess buildup of gas from trying to start it so many times.
